What’s special about the upcoming Sierra is that it still manages to capture the essence of the iconic Sierra of the 90s!

Back in 1991 when there was no wireless phone connectivity, or even air conditioning for that matter, simple and functional cars were made with the prime focus on the mechanical side of things. And during that time, the Tata Sierra SUV was launched. An iconic name in the Indian automotive industry, it had its fair share of problems, but it popularized the idea of owning an SUV which you could drive on uncharted terrains.

Fast-forward to the year 2025, 34 years later to be precise, Tata showcases the concept version of the Sierra ICE at the Auto Expo 2025! So how has it grown, what has changed? And what makes it so attractive? Read on as we answer all these questions and more!

The OG Sierra

1991, a time when roads in India were not really roads and the concept of a rugged SUV was still unknown to many. That is when a legend was born, the Sierra SUV! Some of its mechanicals, fascia and part of the interior were shared with the Tata Telcoline pickup, however, the Sierra brought its own charm with its unique styling including the three-door design and rugged looks. In short, it was an SUV with a soul!

It had a spacious cabin and was capable of going off-road without any fuss. It used to come with a 2-litre diesel engine and used to almost make 100 PS which was pretty impressive for that generation of cars.

In the early 90s, the Sierra became “The” car to own and had a personality that attracted many. Later in the early 2000s, when more modern SUVs and capable sedans were introduced in India, the Sierra’s reign came to an end.

Tata Sierra EV Concept

Before the Sierra ICE was revealed this year, Tata had showcased the EV version of the SUV multiple times. In 2020, after almost three decades of the original Sierra, the electric iteration was revealed in its concept form. Its design was completely modern and stylish while taking certain design cues from the first generation. Electrification of vehicles has become the trend and demand of the auto industry, and what was once known for its robust diesel engine, was unveiled with a battery pack underneath! What stood out was the design of the concept (from the sides) which instantly reminded you of the iconic Sierra.

Then again in 2023, Tata showcased the Sierra EV at the Auto Expo 2023. This time it seemed to have become more mature and closer to its production-ready form. In fact, we have even done a detailed story on it and you can check it out here

Tata Sierra ICE Concept

At the recent Auto Expo 2025, the concept version of the Sierra ICE was revealed in a more modern and boxy avatar. Tata has tastefully captured the iconic design bits of the Sierra and has blended them well with modern styling and sleek design elements. Tata has tried to recreate the signature rectangular rear window of the original Sierra, which has now been split due to the five-door layout. It looks unlike any conventional SUV and stands out among the herd.

We expect it to be equipped with a premium cabin and a whole lot of top-notch features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated and powered seats, multi-colour ambient lighting and more. It is likely to come with a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, a diesel unit and an electric powertrain.

It is expected to be launched in India after the electric Sierra. Prices could start from Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom) and it will go up against the likes of the Maruti Grand Vitara, Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Tata Sierra

In the past 34 years, India has come a long way, and so has the car scene in our country. However, Tata has stayed true to its roots and the design and personality of the iconic Sierra can be seen in the new one as well, while having its relevance in today’s times! We all love the feeling of nostalgia! Now imagine nostalgia blended with modern styling, because that is what the Sierra’s design exudes and that is what makes it so special.
