While the outgoing WR-V is basically a beefed up Jazz, the new-gen model is based on the Honda SUV RS concept that was previewed earlier

  • New-gen Honda WR-V is slightly larger than the four-metre mark
  • It looks more like an SUV as compared to the outgoing model.
  • Dashboard lifted off from the Amaze, albeit in an all-black theme.
  • Noteworthy features include ADAS, a touchscreen infotainment, and six airbags.
  • Gets just the 121PS, 1.5-litre petrol engine in the Indonesian market.

Honda has taken the wraps off the new-gen WR-V SUV in the Indonesian market. The new SUV, which is based on the SUV RS concept previewed in 2021, could make its way to the Indian market. While the previous-gen WR-V was a beefed-up Jazz, the new-gen SUV is a ground-up new product based on the Amaze's platform.

Its upright fascia has a honeycomb mesh grille that merges both the LED headlamps. To add character, the front bumper has aggressively styled detailing for a sportier character. The silhouette is still more crossover rather than a boxy SUV. But elements like the flared wheel arches with body cladding and 17-inch alloys add muscle. Topping up the overall design are the split-LED tail lamps and a ruggedly styled bumper with black cladding.

A point to note is that the new WR-V isn’t a sub-4 metre SUV. It measures 4,060mm long, 1,780mm wide, 1,608mm tall, and sits on a 2,485mm wheelbase. Save for the wheelbase, the new-gen model is bigger in all aspects. Here’s a quick look at how it compares against its predecessor still on sale in India:

Nope, you haven’t suddenly entered the Honda Amaze, but the WR-V’s dashboard layout is almost a photocopy of the sedan’s. However, it comes finished in an all-black theme with red inserts that lend it a sportier look. It also gets all the features you’d be expecting from this class of vehicles.

So highlights include a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, steering-mounted audio controls, keyless entry with push button start, and a multi-info display. However, the big boost is in the safety department, where it now features the ADAS suite from the City Hybrid, six airbags, electronic stability control, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

In its home turf, the WR-V gets just the fifth-gen City’s 121PS, 1.5-litre petrol engine, teamed with just a CVT. There’s no turbo-petrol nor a strong-hybrid powertrain. If it makes its way to India, Honda could plonk in the smaller 1.2-litre petrol engine found in the existing model.

Speaking of which, the new WR-V measures over four metres, and Honda might have to make some big changes to duck it under the sub-4 metre mark for tax benefits. So if it comes to India, we expect it to do so sometime next year. It will renew its rivalry with the Kia Sonet, Tata NexonHyundai Venue, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza
