The newly launched 5 door Mahindra Thar Roxx has been garnering a lot of attention from the off-road enthusiasts and the SUV savvy audience in the country. With prices for the rear-wheel drive variants ranging from Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 20.49 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom), the prices for four-wheel-drive variants are yet to be disclosed. It is being offered in six broad variants, bookings for which will commence from October 3 across the dealership network, with deliveries to follow soon after. So if you were planning on booking one, we give an overview of the mid-spec AX3L variant in 10 images in this article.
Upfront, the Mahindra Thar Roxx gets a revised fascia adorning a redesigned grille and bumpers down below. While the AX3L variant gets LED projector headlamps, it misses out on the signature C-shaped LED DRLs and LED fog-lamps. The bumpers also sport a dual-tone finish with silver insert.
The side profile gets an elongated wheelbase accommodating rear doors with the handles placed on the C-pillar. The fenders sport Thar Roxx badging and also get a foot-step as standard. While the alloy wheels are limited to higher variants, the AX3L gets 18-inch black coloured steel wheels.
At the back, the Thar Roxx features LED tail lights and also gets equipped with a defogger and wiper with washer for the rear windscreen. A new spare wheel cover can be seen here and similar to the front, the rear bumpers also get silver finish. So visually, the AX3L variant of the Thar Roxx doesn’t get any addition over the one-above base-spec MX3 variant.
The interiors of the Mahindra Thar Roxx AX3L variant get a dual-tone black and white theme with black coloured fabric upholstery. The main highlight of the dashboard is the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
This variant also marks the entry for a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display. With the 9-speaker premium Harman/Kardon sound system being limited to the higher trims, the AX3L variant gets a basic 4-speaker system. From this variant onwards, you also get an automatic climate control system with AC vents for the rear passengers as well. It also comes with wireless phone charging along with 15W type-C charging port for rear passengers and 12 V power outlet up front.
Comfort and convenience features include push button start/stop, 60:40 split functionality for the rear seats, a height adjustable driver seat, and height adjustable front seat belts. This variant also comes equipped with automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers, footwell lighting, auto-dimming IRVM, electrically adjustable ORVMs and follow-me headlamps.
Unfortunately, the AX3L does not come with any sunroof option and neither does it get powered driver seat and ventilated front seats as those features are limited for higher spec trims only. But in terms of all the basic or must-have features, the Thar AX3L variant doesn’t leave you wanting for more.
Safety tech is filled to the brim with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard. It also gets an electronic parking brake with auto-hold functionality. Additionally it gets a 3-point seat belt for all passengers, ISOFIX child seat mounts, reverse camera with rear parking sensors, and even hill hold and hill descent control. The AX3L variant misses out on a 360 degree camera setup but comes equipped with ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) features like lane-keep assist, emergency braking, blind spot detection and adaptive cruise control (AT only).
The AX3L variant of the Mahindra Thar Roxx gets only one engine and transmission option. It is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 152 PS and 330 Nm mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, there is no option of an automatic transmission and this variant is limited to the rear-wheel-drive configuration. The four-wheel drive option is offered from the MX5 variant.
The AX3L variant of the Mahindra thar Roxx sits in between the line-up being priced at Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom). While, the complete price list with the four-wheel-drive variants are yet to be announced, the pricing for the Thar Roxx ranges from Rs 12.99 lakh to Rs 20.49 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom).
The Mahindra Thar Roxx is a lifestyle off-road capable SUV which rivals the likes of the Force Gurkha 5-door and is a larger alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. For a similar price, you can also consider other SUVs like the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector, Tata Safari, Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
