While most automakers at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 were busy with futuristic EVs complete with complicated screens and concept interiors that probably won't ever make it into production, Suzuki took the world stage to discuss something much more down-to-earth. The automaker debuted the Fronx Flex Fuel (FFV) Concept, an ethanol-fueled version of the compact crossover already available in India.
From first impressions, the Fronx FFV Concept is identical to the petrol variant of the Fronx sold in the Indian market. It has the same compact footprint, urban-friendly posture, and familiar interior. The only thing that changes is under the bonnet. That's where the engine is modified to run on ethanol-blended fuels rather than petrol alone.
Ethanol is produced from farm waste, particularly sugarcane residue, making it a renewable fuel. It produces cleaner combustion, reducing tailpipe emissions, with no changes to how the car is driven or fueled.
This notion resonates because India is among the select larger markets where flex-fuel infrastructure is already in development. The government has begun introducing E20 fuel (20 per cent ethanol blend) at fuel pumps in metropolitan cities. As ethanol is made from agricultural waste, its production supports rural economies, reduces reliance on foreign crude oil, and directly lowers carbon emissions.

Unlike EVs, which require new chargers, or hybrids, which require a more complex powertrain setup, flex-fuel cars simply use the petrol pump network that already exists. For buyers, the experience remains unchanged, no range anxiety and no charging wait times.
As most car manufacturers worldwide are speeding towards full electrification, Suzuki is pursuing a more locally focused approach. Suzuki admits that not all markets are ready to abandon internal combustion engines. Japan and most of Europe have the strength of their energy grids and charging facilities to enable mass EV adoption, while India relies on the affordability and accessibility of fuel.

The timing is noteworthy because India’s Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has been strongly advocating for ethanol-powered vehicles, especially ethanol derived from sugarcane waste.
His stance has been clear: India must reduce oil imports and support farmers using biofuel technology. With ethanol-blended petrol already in circulation, Suzuki’s reveal feels less like a global showcase and more like a strategic nod to what’s coming for India.
If Suzuki gets this one in India, the Fronx FFV would potentially be a useful bridging option between petrol vehicles and pure EVs. Given India's ethanol masterplan and the government's increasing momentum towards using sugarcane fuel, you might even say the timing is coincidental.
Would you choose a flex-fuel Fronx over an EV if they had the same running expenses? Let us know in the comments.
