Jeep has announced that the first Meridian SUV has rolled off the production line at the carmaker’s Ranjangaon facility. Pre-launch bookings are now open for Rs 50,000 at Jeep dealerships as well as on the official website. We expect the SUV to be launched in June priced from Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.

The Toyota Fortuner-rivalling Jeep Meridian is a three-row SUV based on the Compass platform. It features several design cues similar to the larger Grand Cherokee SUV, such as squared wheel arches, an upright tailgate and slim LED tail lamps. Stellantis India’s CEO and Managing Director, Roland Bouchara, said, “the Jeep Meridian will feature up to 82% localisation and has been specially designed, engineered, and tuned for Indian road conditions.” The Meridian is equipped with independent front and rear suspension with frequency selective damping that can adjust the ride quality for comfort in real-time.

Inside, the Meridian gets a brown-black interior theme for a plusher-feeling cabin. It will get similar features as the Compass, including a panoramic sunroof, powered, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, a 10.2-inch fully digital driver’s display, and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

It’s equipped with safety features such as six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), stability control, a 360-degree camera and front and rear parking sensors.

Under the bonnet, the Jeep Meridian will come with a 170PS 2-litre turbo diesel engine at launch, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. An optional 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive (AWD) system will also be offered.

We still don’t have an official launch date for the Meridian, but Jeep says the SUV will start reaching dealerships for test drives later this month. First deliveries are set to begin in June after the Meridian goes on sale in India. It will compete with full-size SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq and MG Gloster.
