The Tata Nexon EV has a waiting period soaring over six months depending on the city you live in. And if you wish to get your hands on the electric SUV sooner, we have some disappointing news as that isn’t likely to happen anytime soon. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., gives us an insight into this.

Chandra said, “There is a huge ramp up on the demand side as petrol prices are increasing. So there is a challenge and you’ll see that demand will increase not only in India, but globally as well in this decade. Supply is limiting the penetration of the pace of electric vehicles.”

A more clearer way to look at this is by talking numbers. Seven months back, Tata produced 600 units whereas demand used to be at 1,200 units for a month. Now, Tata says they have increased production to 3,600 units, but demand, on the other hand, has soared up to over 6,000 units for the all-electric Nexon.

The Nexon EV is being produced in the same assembly line as the ICE-powered Nexon and Chandra said he can dedicate the entire line for just the electric model as well. But the ongoing semiconductor shortage is also part of the reason to blame for Tata not being able to meet the Nexon EV’s overwhelming demand.

The Tata Nexon EV has been topping the sales list for the previous few months thanks to its value for money pricing and decent driving range of around 200 to 250km. The homegrown carmaker is now gearing up to launch the long range Nexon EV with more features and minor styling changes.

The Tata Nexon EV is currently priced from Rs 14.54 lakh (ex-showroom), and is a more affordable alternative to the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV.
