Mahindra Vision SXT Concept Revealed; Is This The Thar E Pickup?

Mahindra loves making Independence Day about more than just flag hoisting; they drop wild concept SUVs that look like they’ve been ripped straight from a post-apocalyptic action film. This year, out of the four "Visions" they dropped, one of the head-turners was the Vision SXT concept, a pickup-flavoured offshoot of the freshly unveiled Vision T, both of which trace their roots back to the Thar.e concept from 2023.
And yes, Mahindra says a production version is coming sometime in late 2027 or early 2028, so this isn’t just a design team doodle.
Here’s everything worth knowing, plus some cheeky observations about the concept Vision.SXT that you might've missed:
Mahindra calls it a pickup body style, but don’t expect the classic “cabin up front, big separate bed at the back” formula. The SXT merges its passenger compartment and cargo area into a single, well-proportioned silhouette.

Out back, there’s a short, exposed deck complete with roll bars, a slim rectangular tailgate panel that lets you peek through, and not to forget the two vertically strapped spare tyres in rally-style yellow harnesses.
Sure, the face is unmistakably Thar.e-inspired, the boxy headlights, the stretched grille, the upright bonnet, but the Vision SXT isn’t just photocopying its cousin’s homework. It’s bulked up with a chunkier bumper, more prominent wheel arches, and a wider stance.

The front grille with glass encasing on the lower section gets some form of differentiation, matching headlamp treatment, and chunkier off-road-spec wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres.

There are also a few tasty details: exposed door hinges, C-pillar-mounted rear door handles, bonnet latches, and roof carrier hook. Looks cool!
The Vision.SXT’s design work came from Mahindra’s studios in Mumbai and the UK by Pratap's team, but the concept itself was brought to life at the Mahindra Research Valley here in India.

Which means it’s got global design sensibilities but has been tailored for our roads, trails, and, yes, speed breakers the size of small hills.
Step inside the Vision.SXT and you’ll notice it shares its cabin DNA with the Vision T, a clean, clutter-free dashboard that’s equal parts purposeful and stylish. The layout is minimalist, and Mahindra has wisely kept enough physical buttons so you won’t be jabbing at a screen trying to turn on the wipers in the middle of a thunderstorm.

A free-standing digital instrument cluster takes pride of place ahead of the driver, paired with a large portrait-oriented infotainment display that should feel right at home for the swipe-and-scroll generation.
The new three-spoke steering wheel adds a bit of flair, while the panoramic sunroof promises the perfect view for starry camping nights.
Underneath it all is Mahindra’s new NU_UX software interface, which boasts to offer best-in-class connectivity and features. And yes, it’s a five-seater, ideal for bringing along your crew… or enough snacks to survive a week in the wilderness.
This is Mahindra’s shiny new NU_IQ modular monocoque platform, designed for SUVs between 3990 mm and 4320 mm in length. The Vision.SXT sits at the larger end, with a 2665 mm wheelbase (longer than a Hyundai Creta’s 2610 mm), boasting of class-best cabin space, all while keeping a tight 10.3 m turning radius.

NU_IQ can take petrol, diesel, hybrid, or full-electric setups in FWD, AWD and LHD or RHD guise, so there's a lot of versatility.
It’s also gunning for a 5-star safety rating with GNCAP and Euro NCAP, too, so it’s not just about looking tough.
Alongside the Vision SXT and Vision T, Mahindra also revealed the Vision S and Vision X concepts, all on the same NU_IQ platform. Together, they preview the next-gen Thar, Scorpio, and XUV lineups. But remember, production versions are years away (from 2027 onwards), and plenty of these wild concept touches might be toned down.

Right now, the Vision SXT is a concept. But Mahindra has a history of turning its Independence Day flexes into reality, and Mahindra has already confirmed that it might see light sometime in late 2027 or early 2028 after the Vision S and the Vision T. Upon launch, it will be placed in the lifestyle pickup segment, electric or not, it will surely make a lot of noise.
