Hero Xtreme 160R 4V Expert Review
The sporty 160cc segment has always been a fiercely competitive one and the Xtreme 160R has been Hero's response to it. Now, with the introduction of the brand-new Xtreme 160R 4V, Hero is committed to taking on this segment directly by enhancing both the engine and hardware components.
Design
The latest iteration of the Hero Xtreme 160R, the 4V variant, has a more muscular aesthetic when compared to its 2V counterpart. This enhanced appearance is achieved through bolder design lines, a taller and more robust tank design, and the addition of a split-seat configuration, collectively giving the motorcycle with a sportier character. The inclusion of a gold USD fork and a selection of vibrant color options further elevates the motorcycle's visual appeal, giving it a refreshing yet formidable look.
Engine, Mileage and Performance
Thanks to the addition of a 4-valve head and an oil cooler, the Xtreme 160R 4V now produces a notably more energetic and spirited performance compared to its predecessor. Improved tractability allows for comfortable cruising in fifth gear at city speeds, a task the bike handles adeptly. This enhancement is likely to have a positive impact on overall fuel efficiency.
The new Xtreme witnesses a power and torque increase of 1.7PS and 0.6Nm compared to the 2V model, resulting in quicker acceleration than before.
Handling and Ride Quality
The inclusion of an upside-down (USD) fork in the front, combined with a monoshock suspension at the rear, imparts a sportier handling dynamic to the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V. When navigating high-speed corners, the bike exhibits a composed demeanor, and the front-end inspires greater confidence than its 2V counterpart when leaning into swift turns. Even when encountering bumps and potholes, the suspension system maintains its poise.
The redesigned seat and updated tank profile contribute to a more engaging riding experience and enhance the bike's agility. While the braking setup remains consistent with the 2V model, it's worth noting that the addition of dual-channel ABS could further enhance the already decent braking performance.
Comfort:
The Hero Xtreme 160R 4V’s seat design has been given a revision and as a result, it is now more comfortable to sit on for a long period of time. Also, the suspension setup manages to soak up bumps and potholes on the road very well.
Features
In terms of features, the 160R 4V comes equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation functionality, albeit accessible exclusively via a dedicated app, which may pose usability challenges. Furthermore, the digital instrument console has poor readability under intense sunlight conditions, suggesting that an upgrade to a colour TFT screen would have been a more suitable enhancement.
Verdict:
The updates in the engine, ergonomics, and hardware have significantly enhanced the bike's performance, making it notably sportier and more responsive than its predecessor. This transformation has also extended to the handling dynamics, making it a more enjoyable ride. However, these improvements come at a cost, resulting in a price increase of approximately Rs 8,000-10,000.
With the standard variant priced at Rs 1,27,300 and the top-spec Premium variant at Rs 1,36,500 (all ex-showroom Delhi), the Xtreme 160R 4V commands a higher price point compared to the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V Special Edition, which offers superior performance and additional features.
Had Hero integrated dual-channel ABS at the same price, it would have made the bike a more enticing option. Nevertheless, even with its current pricing, the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V remains a viable choice for those seeking a sporty 160cc bike with commendable handling characteristics.
