The premium two-wheelers segment has been gaining good traction in India for quite some time now. Unfortunately, bikers who are planning to purchase a new motorcycle will have to shell out more due to the revised motor vehicle tax structure. From June 7th, the basic motor vehicle tax has been hiked from 3 per cent to up to 20 per cent.

Commenting on the updatation, Subhash Pedamkar, Deputy, Regional Transport Office, said: "We have updated our software and will be charging the revised rates of two-wheeler road tax from Tuesday morning.”

"Most of the bikes are of high value these days (Rs 1.5-2 lakh), and therefore, buyers will feel the pinch. For imported bikes, the tax slabs are being doubled. The new tax structure will be in the range of 16-20% for imported two-wheelers." he further added.

Before the implementation of the new structure, the rate for registration of domestic and imported motorcycles was 7 per cent. Now onwards, for new domestic bikes, the applicable tax will be 10 per cent while for premium imported motorcycles it will be between 16 to 20 per cent.

The new tax structure was announced during the State Government's budget that was held in March 2016. Since the entire process is computerised, the necessary software update has been completed and now the respective RTOs will register the new motorcycles on the basis of the new tax structure.
