Toyota has reportedly begun work on a new diesel-hybrid powertrain for the Land Cruiser, Hilux, and other all-wheel drive models. The Japanese manufacturer is planning to make all its vehicles hybrid by the end of 2030 as stricter emission norms come into play.

The technical specifications of its upcoming diesel-hybrid powertrain is yet to be revealed. But reports suggest that the electric system can be fitted to engine capacities ranging up to 3.5 litres.

Speculations that the Land Cruiser diesel’s new 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 could be hybridised while the next-gen Hilux and Land Cruiser Prado will get a 2.5-litre hybrid unit are doing the rounds. But before we jump into conclusions, it must be mentioned that these are just speculations and nothing has been confirmed yet.

Toyota has always been and is one of the pioneers in hybrid technology. A diesel hybrid car would make plenty of sense for the Japanese carmaker as it would combine the torquey nature of a diesel engine with the fuel efficiency of a hybrid.

It remains to be seen if Toyota would offer their new diesel hybrid models in India, provided they go into development in the first case. But considering that the Hilux and newly launched Land Cruiser LC300 are on the cards for India, these diesel hybrid models could be under consideration. Currently, the manufacturer offers two hybrids in India: the Camry and the Vellfire.
