MotoGP was first introduced to this high-tech safety equipment by Italian safety equipment manufacturer Dainese back in the 2007. Known to the motorsport world as the Dainese D-Air Racing Airbag, MotoGP World Champions Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo were among the first riders to try out the ‘leather airbags’ at the 2009 British Grand Prix at Donington Park.
Repsol Honda Riders will now benefit from a similar technology developed by motorsport gear and safety equipment specialists Alpinestars, which has developed a state-of-the art technology in the form of the Alpinestars Tech Air electronic airbag system. This entirely wireless active safety technology is completely self contained within the rider’s race suits, relying on no external sources of information or system management.
The microprocessor fitted into the system constantly monitors the riders’ movements when they are aboard the Honda RC212V and this determines whether to launch the airbags in the unfortunate event of an accident.
The Alpinestars system offers a trigger to full airbag inflation time of less than 45 milliseconds, using a nitrogen based gas mix. The inflated airbags gives the rider complete protection in excess of 5 seconds before deflating completely.
This will give the rider the choice of re-mounting his bike and continuing the race. A second inflation charge can also be deployed giving the same level of protection a second time if needed.
Offering complete safety and reliability through its Tech Air electronic airbag system the Alpinestars safety equipment will be utilized by the Repsol Honda riders in their forthcoming races.
