  • Next-gen Scorpio could co exist with the existing model.
  • Will utilise the Thar’s new 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines.
  • Upcoming Scorpio seems to be larger and will come with a more modern interior.
  • Likely to reach showrooms around mid-2021.

It’s been a while since we had any updates about the next-gen Mahindra Scorpio, but the manufacturer has now trademarked the ‘Scorpio Sting’ name in the country. Is this the name for the existing Scorpio’s successor?

Mahindra could use the ‘Scorpio Sting’ name for the next-gen model, which could co-exist with the existing SUV. The new name will help differentiate both the models. This tactic is currently followed by Hyundai, which sells the old-gen Grand i10 and its successor, the Grand i10 Nios, under one roof. We also saw Ford doing the same with the Fiesta before. That said, this is speculative and we can confirm it only once Mahindra provides us with more information.

Despite featuring an evolutionary design, the next-gen Mahindra Scorpio seems to be larger than the existing model. The interior also looks familiar, though it features new design elements and a larger touchscreen infotainment system. Have a closer look at the upcoming Scorpio in spy shots right here

The new Scorpio will be powered by Mahindra’s brand new engines -- 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk all-aluminum diesel -- from the Thar. Mahindra is yet to reveal specifications, but we expect it to be similar to or more powerful than the existing model’s 140PS 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. The upcoming model should be offered with a 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions, as well as standard rear wheel and optional four-wheel drivetrains.

The new-gen Mahindra Scorpio is expected to be launched around mid-2021 and is likely to command a slight premium over the current model, which is priced from Rs 12.42 lakh (ex-showroom). The Scorpio will be the only body-on-frame SUV in its segment and will rival the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, MG Hector and Tata Harrier
