The new base-spec variant S3+ comes with the same 2.2-litre diesel engine as other variants, albeit in a detuned state

  • The Scorpio is now available in five variants: S3+, S5, S7, S9, and S11.

  • Mahindra is offering the new S3+ variant in 7 and 9-seater layouts.

  • It gets manual AC, tilt steering, and follow-me-home headlamps.

  • The new S3+ variant is priced at Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

  • The Scorpio is still pricier than its diesel-powered monocoque-chassis rivals: Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Mahindra’s compact SUV, the Scorpio, has just become more affordable, with the carmaker having launched the new base-spec S3+ at Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is available in 7 and 9-seater configurations. Here’s a look at the SUV’s variant-wise price list:

Variant

Price (ex-showroom Delhi)

S3+ (new)

Rs 11.99 lakh

S5

Rs 12.68 lakh

S7

Rs 14.74 lakh

S9

Rs 15.37 lakh

S11

Rs 16.53 lakh

S3+ is Rs 69,000 more affordable than the previous base-spec, S5. Despite introducing a more economical variant, the Scorpio is costlier than its diesel-powered monocoque-chassis rival: Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

In terms of engine option, the S3+ gets the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel motor (teamed with a 5-speed manual), now detuned to produce 120PS and 280Nm. The other variants get a 140PS/319Nm version of the same engine, mated to a 6-speed MT.

Mahindra has equipped the S3+ with a manual AC, all-four power windows, tilt steering, and follow-me-home headlamps. However, it misses out on a few essentials like height-adjustable driver’s seat, remote central locking, cruise control, and rear wiper with washer. Standard safety features include dual front airbags, ABS, and rear parking sensors.

The Scorpio is an alternative to other closely priced compact SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Renault Duster, Nissan Kicks, and the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross. This update could be the final one for the current-gen Scorpio before Mahindra bids farewell to it and debuts the new-gen model around mid-2021.
