Reports suggest the push for EV adoption could see the axing of the legendary muscle car

The Chevrolet Camaro is a muscle car that has been a cult classic since its debut in the ‘60s. Not only is it a true rival to the Ford Mustang, but it’s also recognised as ‘Bumblebee’ from the Transformers movies in more recent times. Now, reports suggest the sixth-generation muscle car may be reaching the end of the road by 2024 as a consequence of parent company General Motors' push for EV adoption.

What’s more, the report says the Camaro will be replaced by an all-electric performance sedan, likely bearing a different nameplate, by 2025. Details on the new EV are scarce, but we expect it to utilise the Ultium battery platform from the Hummer EV

The sixth-generation Camaro is currently offered with various engines ranging from a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit that makes 276PS to a 6.2-litre 455PS V8. The flagship Camaro is the beastly ZL1 that pushes out 650PS and an even more impressive earth-twisting 881Nm of torque from a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine.

Parent company General Motors has extensive plans to electrify its entire lineup, with 30 new EVs by 2025 and a target to go all-electric by 2035. Chevrolet isn’t the only muscle car company working towards electrification, even Dodge is planning to introduce its first all-electric muscle car in 2024.

You might want to take these reports with a pinch of salt, though, as Chevrolet is yet to comment on the development. We hope the carmaker finds a way to keep the legendary Camaro muscle car alive and we don’t mean the Ford way --  christening its Mach-E electric SUV ‘Mustang’.
