After a radio silence of four long years, Ford is firing up its Indian engines all over again-quite literally. The American auto giant has confirmed its plans to revive the Maraimalai Nagar plant in Chennai to manufacture next-generation engines for export. Production is set to begin by 2029, signalling Ford's official return to the Indian manufacturing scene.
This revival comes under the Ford plus global plan, with an initial investment of Rs 3,250 crore, and will reportedly create around 600 new jobs in Tamil Nadu. It's a big move, especially considering the company had pulled the plug on local operations back in 2021, when the assembly lines producing the EcoSport, Figo, Aspire, Freestyle, and the much-loved Endeavour fell silent.
Ford says that engines with "next-generation" technologies will be produced at this facility. The annual production capacity is pegged at 2,35,000 engines, and the output will cater exclusively to export markets, at least for now.
This fits into Ford's global strategy to use India as a manufacturing base.

While production is still a few years away, the Chennai plant will undergo major retooling this year itself to accommodate the new manufacturing setup. This will also help Ford in segregating and planning their global production base.
Now, the part that will excite us, i.e. the enthusiasts, is this: does Ford's comeback mean we might see our beloved Endeavour back on Indian roads?
Officially, Ford says it's focusing only on engine exports. Unofficially, though, the timing and scale of this investment raise eyebrows. The Sanand facility of the company (on lease from Tata Motors) continues to produce engines in smaller numbers, while with the Chennai plant roaring back to life, this ecosystem for local assembly is already halfway there.
So, while nothing is confirmed yet, it’s fair to say, never say never. If the response to the Endeavour’s reintroduction in markets like Thailand and Australia is taken well, then India’s love affair with the SUV might just renew someday. Maybe soon?

Ford's back, baby-and not in the most obvious way. Revival of the Chennai plant may start with engines, but that is far from being the end of the story.
For now, we'll take the good news, rev up some optimism, and keep one eye on the horizon for the big, burly SUV we've all been missing.
