Mercedes-Benz AI Vehicle Scanner

Mercedes-Benz India has rolled out a suite of new service initiatives. This includes a new country-first AI-powered vehicle scanner. The technology debuted at the inauguration of Mumbai's largest luxury service facility, which is in Jogeshwari, Mumbai. This move is coupled with new maintenance packages designed to lower the cost of ownership for older vehicles, all part of a broader strategy to enhance the long-term owner experience.

Quick read:

  • India's first AI vehicle scanner, the XENTRY system, is now live at Mercedes-Benz's new Mumbai facility.

  • The scanner uses 13 cameras and LiDAR to create a 360-degree vehicle report in minutes, detecting damage and tyre wear.

  • A new 'Service Select' package offers up to 25% savings on parts for Mercedes-Benz cars aged 7 years or older.

XENTRY Scanner: How It Works

The fed images, which are analysed by the AI-based software in the Xentry system is designed to detect and analyse the whole exterior of the car. This includes scratches and dents on the body, tyre health, fluid leaks, etc. It can also differentiate between different fluids like oil and water. The system is also designed to maintain the privacy report generated by the software and upload it to the cloud.

While this is something new that has come to the country, it has already been operational in countries like Germany, Italy and South Korea.

How Does It Matter To The Customer?

In simple words, it comes down to efficiency and transparency of the service. When the system creates the 360-degree scanned record of the customer’s car, it is almost immediately available with transparent analysis. This eliminates the process of manual inspection, which can take much longer and yeild differed analyses of the severity of the issues detected.

Overall, this simplifies the process of inspection and service for both the dealer and the customer. The speed of the real-time data helps to discuss the necessary work which needs to be done on the car as well. Moreover, this also helps to standardise the quality of the inspections.

What Ownership Costs Less Now

AI scanner aside, Mercedes-Benz has also introduced a new service scheme that helps to reduce the cost of ownership for its cars. The ‘Service Select’ package is aimed specifically at cars which are seven or more years old. The package helps to reduce the maintenance cost of the cars by up to 25 per cent on select parts required during the periodic services and brake care.

The package also includes a two-year warranty for the parts fitted during the service. This is on top of the ‘Star Ease’ package which offers an extended warranty of the car up to six years from the standard three-year warranty. All of these in turn hope to help the residual values of Mercedes-Benz cars in India.

The Broader Ownership Play

These initiatives are not isolated moves but components of a comprehensive strategy to make owning a Mercedes-Benz a more seamless and less costly affair over the long term. The company's service network is already a massive operation, servicing approximately three cars every minute and selling around 12,500 parts daily across the country. The focus is now shifting from just scale to the quality and transparency of the experience.

By introducing AI for inspections, the brand is tackling a key friction point in the service process. By launching targeted discount packages for older cars, it's directly addressing concerns about the rising cost of maintenance outside the warranty period. And by continuing to invest in state-of-the-art facilities with its partners, it's ensuring the physical infrastructure can deliver on the promise of a premium experience.

ZigSays...

Mercedes-India’s efforts towards easing the ownership of their cars in India are commendable. The improvement in the service experience and the extra service package to extend the support of the older cars will help to keep higher interest in the brand’s cars and keep their customers loyal to the brand. Also, the fact that there is more support for older vehicles will help the pre-owned market of Mercedes cars.

The AI-powered Xentry scanner is a new piece of technology which shows that AI can be well incorporated. The efficiency of the service will also help to improve the service experience and also maintain transparency.
