25 Years Of Skoda In India: A Look Back At Every Model Sold

From setting up its first facility in 2000, Skoda Auto India now marks 25 years of operations in the country. The brand’s first launch, the locally assembled Octavia in 2001, quickly struck a chord with enthusiasts for its solid build and understated performance. 

Over the years, Skoda has established a strong presence in India’s premium and enthusiast-oriented segments, offering models that range from practical sedans to performance-focused RS variants. To mark the milestone, Skoda is rolling out special anniversary editions across its current line-up. But before we get to those, here’s a look back at the Czech brand’s journey in India.

Octavia

Skoda’s entry into the Indian market began with a car that quickly became a statement. The earlier, first-generation Octavia had laid the groundwork globally as a high-quality, functional vehicle, and it was well-received by the Indian audience upon its introduction. It set the tone for the brand’s value-driven appeal. The second-generation Octavia marked a leap, offering a larger and more upmarket sedan. 

The estate version offered even more space, outshining some larger rivals, while the vRS variant became even more appealing than its predecessor. That said, the Octavia RS launched in 2004 in India featured a 1.8-litre turbo-petrol engine generating 150 PS. In 2020, the Octavia RS 245 pushed the formula further with the 2-litre TSI engine producing 245 PS and 370 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DSG. 

Superb 

The Superb became a benchmark for rear-seat comfort and executive appeal. Its long wheelbase meant sprawling legroom, while features like a sunroof and clever touches like the “TwinDoor” boot kept it a step ahead. Over the years, petrol and diesel engines kept it versatile and relevant. The Superb, in its turbo-petrol engine-powered avatar, earned a reputation for combining luxury with performance. After discontinuing it in April 2023, Skoda reintroduced the third-gen Superb as a full import in April 2024. The brand is also expected to launch the fourth-gen model sometime this year.

Laura

Then came the Laura, the spiritual successor to the first-gen Octavia in India, offering a blend of sharp design and capable diesel-powered engines. And, for enthusiasts, a vRS version that remains a rare sight today.

The Laura vRS featured a 160 PS 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. It stood out visually with RS body kits, complete with a spoiler, xenon lamps, LEDs, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the upholstery featured part-leather, part-Alcantara front seats, along with a touchscreen infotainment system for added convenience.

Fabia

Before premium hatchbacks were a trend, the Fabia was already playing that game. With its solid build, uncluttered interiors, and a choice of petrol and diesel engines, it was more than just a city runabout. Powertrain options include a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.6-litre diesel unit. The Fabia quietly raised the bar for refinement in India’s premium hatch segment, though it remained niche and was ultimately pulled from the lineup a few years later due to shifting market demands. 

Yeti

Launched in 2010, the Skoda Yeti immediately caught attention with its upright, boxy stance, an unconventional look that set it apart from other SUVs. With the availability of all-wheel drive, it delivered composed handling and off-road capability, earning a loyal following among enthusiasts. By the 2014 facelift, the Yeti softened some of its visual quirks with updates like bi-xenon headlamps, LED tail-lights, and subtle bumper redesigns. Mechanically, the 2014 Yeti continued with a 2-litre diesel engine in both 4x2 and 4x4 variants.

Rapid

Slotting below the Octavia, the Rapid was Skoda’s attempt to target a wider audience in a more budget-oriented segment. It was offered with both petrol and diesel engines, and in the BS6 era, only with a 1-litre turbo-petrol unit. The Monte Carlo edition added a sportier flair with enhanced visual appeal. Alongside its competitive pricing, the Rapid was also known for its handling and overall driving dynamics, often praised as superior in its segment.

Kodiaq

The Kodiaq established Skoda as a strong contender in India’s premium SUV segment. Offering a spacious cabin, practical and feature-rich interiors, and all-wheel-drive capability, it was an inviting choice for families seeking versatility. Following the launch of the 2025 Kodiaq, Skoda is also expected to bring the more potent Kodiaq RS to India. It will likely be powered by a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 265 PS and 400 Nm.

Karoq

The Karoq made its India debut in 2020 as a CBU import, offering an alternative between compact and full-size SUVs. Its muscular fascia and sloping roofline gave it a modern look that stood out without trying too hard. Inside, the Karoq delivered a familiar cabin that felt practical. Rear passengers got plenty of legroom, supportive seat bases, and ample headroom even with the large panoramic sunroof. Power came from a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine producing 150 PS and 250 Nm. Thanks to its suspension tuning, the Karoq provided a comfortable ride over rough roads while still keeping the drive engaging.

India 2.0 Strategy with Kushaq and Slavia

As part of Skoda’s localised “India 2.0” initiative, the Kushaq and Slavia were introduced and have helped redefine the brand’s mainstream appeal. The Kushaq is retailed in the compact SUV space, with a choice of two turbo-petrol engines. The Slavia, meanwhile, competes with the likes of the Hyundai Verna and Honda City, featuring sleek styling and similar 1-litre and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine options as the Kushaq.

Marking its 25th year in India, Skoda has also rolled out exclusive Anniversary Editions of both the Kushaq and Slavia. These get a distinctive Deep Black paint finish, special 25-year badging, and blacked-out alloy wheels, along with upmarket touches inside the cabin. The Kushaq and Slavia Anniversary Editions are also offered with the Tornado Red exterior shade option. You also get feature upgrades like 360-degree camera setup, puddle lamps, and underbody lights with the Anniversary Edition of the Slavia and Kushaq. 

Kylaq

Launched in late 2024, the Kylaq marked Skoda's entry into the sub-4m segment. With its compact footprint, the Kylaq is sold with a price tag under Rs 8 lakh. The Kylaq is available only with a single 1-litre turbo petrol unit that puts out 115 PS and 178 Nm, paired with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options. 

To mark 25 years in India, Skoda is also offering a Limited Edition Kylaq, capped at just 500 units. It is based on the Signature+ and Prestige trims, adding features like a 360-degree camera, puddle lamps, and a distinctive badge on the B-pillar. Prices for the Kylaq Limited Edition start from Rs 11.25 lakh (ex-showroom). 

From introducing the Octavia to expanding its portfolio with SUVs like the Kushaq and Kylaq, Skoda’s journey in India has been one of evolution.
