Next-Gen KTM RC Launch Confirmed For 2027: RS457 Rival Incoming

KTM’s RC lineup is long overdue for a major overhaul, but you’ll have to wait a while. At the Season 3 finale of the KTM Cup, Bajaj Auto’s Probiking head, Manik Nangia, while talking to a media house, dropped a key update. He said that the next big refresh for the RC range is slated for late 2027. While he didn't give out any specifics, the long duration for the update hints at more than just a cosmetic nip and tuck.

Fresh Design Direction Locked In

One thing that is confirmed is a sharper, more aggressive design language. Nangia revealed that early sketches he had seen showcase a redesigned LED headlight along with aerodynamic winglets, a clear nod to KTM’s growing focus on track-inspired styling. It could be along the lines of the recently launched KTM 990 RC R.

However, he stopped short of confirming anything mechanical, suggesting that while the visual identity is finalised, the underpinnings are still being worked out.

Twin-Cylinder Future On The Cards?

It is no secret that Bajaj and KTM are co-developing an all-new parallel-twin engine platform, likely positioned below the 500cc mark for the entire 390 range to upgrade to. This motor will eventually replace the current 390cc platform across multiple KTM families, especially the Duke, Adventure and RC. In fact, test mules of an adventure motorcycle using this upcoming engine have already been spotted testing in Europe, indicating that development is well underway.

If this plays out, the next-gen RC could transition from the current single-cylinder setup to a more refined twin-cylinder configuration.

Why The RC Could Be First In Line

There are strong reasons to believe that the RC will be the first model to adopt this new platform.

For starters, it’s currently the odd one out in KTM’s 390 family. While the Duke and Adventure have already transitioned to the newer 398cc engine, the RC 390 continues with the older 373cc motor. This makes it the most logical candidate for a generational leap.

Secondly, KTM’s broader strategy could involve splitting its supersport lineup into two clear tiers. If a sub-350cc RC (like the upcoming 350cc KTM Duke and Adventure) is introduced to take advantage of favourable tax brackets, it would cater to more budget-conscious buyers. That would leave room for a more powerful, enthusiast-focused RC, likely powered by the upcoming twin-cylinder engine, effectively creating a well-defined gap between the two.

Current RC 390 Here To Stay (For Now)

Despite all the buzz around the future, the existing RC 390 isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Manik Nangnia confirmed that the model will continue on sale, even though it remains the only KTM bike still powered by the older 373cc engine.

With development still in progress, the next-gen KTM RC could shape up to be more than just an evolution and could mark a significant shift in KTM’s entry-level supersport strategy. This will allow the RC to stand up against the Aprilia RS457 on equal or better footing thanks to a stronger mill. Until then, the current RC 390 will continue to hold the fort, even as the brand quietly works on what could be its most substantial update yet.
