Ahead of Diwali, Mercedes-Benz has given the G-Wagon fans a surprise! The German carmaker has launched the G450d variant of its iconic G-Class SUV at Rs 2.90 crore (ex-showroom). With the G450d in the lineup, you can now have the SUV in petrol, diesel and electric powertrains at the same time. Here is a close look at the new G450d:
First, the price tag of the G450d, which is a hefty Rs 2.90 Crore(ex-showroom) before options.

Note: Mercedes-Benz offers extensive customisation options under their Manufaktur program, including exclusive paint colours, upholstery options, and trims like spare wheel rings, seat trims and decorative stitching, which would cost extra over the base pricing.
On the outside, the G450d retains the iconic G-Wagon shape that enthusiasts have known for decades. However, there are a few unique elements that distinguish it from its AMG and EQ brethren. These include a new front bumper with vertical slats, new A-pillar cladding and a roof edge spoiler. Besides this, the boxy shape, round headlamps and all other elements still offer a signature G-Class look.

Inside, the G450d remains mostly identical to other iterations, with the only slight revision being an updated 12.3-inch MBUX infotainment system with augmented reality. Besides this, it still gets the upright dashboard, power window switches on the window sill, a digital instrument cluster and faux silver accents all over the cabin.

As for the feature list, the G450d gets a new off-road cockpit display with the transparent bonnet feature functionality. It also gets the aforementioned 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 18-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system, customisable drive modes, ambient lighting, headliner-mounted speaker, USB Type-C charging ports and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
In terms of the safety suite, it gets 9 airbags, Level 2 ADAS, electronic stability control, 360 degree camera, brake assist and traction control.

Under the hood, the G450d is powered by a 3-litre six-cylinder diesel engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It also gets the much-acclaimed Four Wheel Drive system with three differential locks as standard. Here are the detailed specifications:

Notably, Mercedes-Benz used to offer the G400d diesel previously with an output of 330 PS and 700 Nm, giving the G450d an increase of 37 PS and 50 Nm of torque.
The G is so iconic that it does not have any direct rivals, although one can say it competes against other luxury SUVs such as the Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX500d.

The G450d is every bit as iconic as other variants of the G are, and now with a diesel under the hood, it is a lot more practical as well. That also means that it carries a shockingly hefty price tag, but can you really argue about price when it comes to a G-Class? The answer seems to be ‘No’, given how quickly they get sold out, and with just 50 units coming in the first batch, it will remain an elusive sight on the roads.
