Even if you are not a car enthusiast, chances are that you are aware of what a G-Wagen is! Among the many exciting Mercs, the G-Class SUV has surely been one of the most desirable models produced by the German automaker. The G-Wagen’s lineup was recently extended by the launch of the Electric G-Class, i.e. the G 580. Now, it has been revealed that a smaller version of the iconic SUV is in the works. To be specific, Mercedes revealed its G-Class lineup, where a covered smaller version of the G-Wagen was also seen in the “g” category.
While nothing much has been revealed yet, we wonder what the mini version of a dream SUV like the G-Wagen would look like…
While there is no limit to our imaginations, here’s what we expect from the baby G-Wagen:
While the OG G-Wagen is a hoot to drive on a proper highway, it does feel too large to drive in day-to-day conditions. Driving it on narrow lanes or with autorickshaws and two-wheelers around you takes away from the joy of driving a Rs 3 crore plus SUV. To be precise, the G-Wagen measures over 4800 mm in length. This is where the mini G-Wagen would offer more practicality. It will take up significantly less space on the road and you might feel more confident while driving it on a daily basis.
However, a shorter length would also mean less space inside the cabin. Here’s where Mercedes would look to get it right because if a buyer is spending crores, he or she would expect decent space inside the cabin.
…is what we expect from the baby G-Class in terms of design! We expect it to carry the same boxy silhouette of the standard version, thereby staying true to its roots. One can expect it to have rugged styling elements all over, round lighting elements up front and the signature G-Wagen wheel cover at the rear. A Premium Interior With Plenty Features
We expect the interior to have the perfect blend of premiumness and ruggedness. It will probably come with premium soft-touch materials at most places across the cabin. Like the G-Wagen models (ICE and EV) that are currently on sale, the smaller version is also likely to be loaded to the brim with all the premium features.
The top features could include dual 12.3-inch displays (for the driver’s display and the infotainment system), a 360-degree camera, a premium Burmester sound system, multi-colour ambient lighting, multiple airbags, a wireless phone charger and a full suite of ADAS features.
Not to forget those boxy interior elements, which make it unmistakably a G!
Coming to the heart of the matter. The current G-Class comes with a mighty 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which makes 585 PS and 850 Nm. It would be ideal if Mercedes could offer this unit with the baby G-Wagen.
However, with downsizing of engines being the new trend, chances are that the Mini G could also get the 476 PS 2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged that we have seen on the new AMG C63 S E Performance or an AMG 53 or 43 spec. The AMG 53 could likely be offered with the 6-cylinder inline petrol engine with a mild-hybrid setup and the AMG 43 spec can get the 421 PS 2-litre turbocharged petrol.
Like the elder G-Class, it could also get an old-school oil burner, maybe at a later stage.
Let us also not rule out the possibility of the smaller iteration being offered in an electric version to fulfil the needs of modern environment-conscious consumers and follow the sustainability path. There’s a high possibility that both the Electric and ICE Mini G would debut side-by-side.
Over the years, G-Wagens have come with great off-roading capabilities, and we expect the Mini G to be even better on uncharted territory. The reason for the same would be its lighter body weight and smaller wheelbase, which could significantly help its case in being the more capable off-roader.
The current G-Wagen is priced from Rs 2.55 crore to Rs 4 crore (ex-showroom), while the electric iteration is priced at Rs 3 crore. One can expect the baby G-Wagen to be priced between Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 2 crore.
It will be a more affordable version, thereby attracting more buyers. We are confident that the smaller version will also be a hit and follow the footsteps of its larger sibling. What do you think?
We are really excited with the thought of welcoming another member in the G family. Let us know in the comments section.
