Maruti Alto is the highest selling car in India.
The carmaker has sold a total of 45 lakh units since the Alto’s inception in 2000.
The last five lakh sales came in under three years.
Prices for the latest iteration of the Maruti Alto range between Rs 3.99 lakh and Rs 5.96 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Maruti Suzuki Alto has been one of the longest running nameplates in the country, behind only the iconic 800 and Gypsy nameplates. Since its inception in the country 23 years ago in the year 2000, the Alto has been the highest selling car with it being the mode of transport for 45 lakh families in India.

To put that into context, a few brands in India have a lower number for combined sales acquired by their entire lineup: that’s how absurdly massive Maruti’s milestone is! So it’s no doubt that the Alto proudly boasts the tag of India's highest selling car.
The current model of theAlto K10, which is in its third-gen avatar, was launched in 2022 and was sold alongside the Alto 800. However, the latter – which was launched in 2020 – was discontinued due to the BS6 Phase 2 emissions norms as the cost of updating small engines is very high and won’t make sense when you consider return on investment.

The Maruti Alto has always been a symbol of the phrase ‘chota packet, bada dhamaka’. Its compact dimensions make it the quintessential city car, especially paired with the 67PS/89Nm 1-litre DualJet petrol engine. There’s also an AMT available for those looking for even more convenience, while a CNG version is also there for those looking for frugal running costs.

Further making it a perpetual favourite, especially in hilly regions, is its lightweight body, which makes it nimble and feel effortless to climb up tricky terrain. You can read our first drive review of the Alto K10 here.
This generation of Alto even comes with a fair bit of kit to keep the occupants comfortable. This list includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, steering-mounted audio and calling controls, manual AC, keyless entry, power-adjustable ORVMs, and a 4-speaker sound system. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors make up the safety features on offer.

Maruti retails the Alto K10 between Rs 3.99 lakh and Rs 5.96 lakh (ex-showroom). It fights off competition from the Renault Kwid.
