  • It will debut in India in 2024.
  • The SUV that will be showcased in South Africa as per an earlier invite is still unknown.
  • Thar 5-door is expected to be priced from around Rs 15 lakh.

All speculations about the Mahindra Thar 5-door breaking cover on August 15 can be put to rest, as per a statement released by the SUV marque. It will not make its debut on August 15 in South Africa. Mahindra was also quick to add that the Thar 5-door will make its debut in the Indian market only in 2024, in accordance with what it said earlier at its investor meet.

Commenting on the topic, Mahindra took to social media to say “With reference to multiple media reports indicating that the much-awaited Mahindra Thar 5-Door will debut at a Mahindra event in South Africa on August 15, we would like to clarify that the launch is not scheduled for this year.During the recently concluded Quarter Results media interaction, we confirmed that the launch of the Thar 5-Door is scheduled for 2024 in India.”

That said, the SUV that will break cover on August 15 in South Africa – as per an invite – is still a mystery model.

Coming back to the Thar 5-door, it will be the more practical version of the 3-door SUV, thanks to its extra length and added set of doors. The SUV will get the same dashboard layout, but with additional features including a sunroof. And as for what’s underpinning it, the off-roader will be based on the Scorpio N’s platform and gets a revised rear suspension. All details about the Mahindra Thar 5-door can be found in this report

As for its powertrain options, the Thar 5-door will get the 150PS 2-litre turbo-petrol and 132PS 2.2-litre diesel engines from the smaller SUV, probably with a bit more power. It should get both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive, the latter with a low-range transfer case for better off-roading. And as for transmission options, it should continue with the existing six-speed manual and six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
