The new Ferrari 296 GTS has premiered as the Maranello-based carmaker’s newest supercar. It’s a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powered by a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine paired with a powerful electric motor to boost performance. It’s the open-top version of the 296 GTB supercar that’s already available globally. The 296 GTS is expected to be launched in India sometime after the 296 GTB makes its debut in the country.
On the outside, the 296 GTS has the same stunning proportions as its fixed-roof sibling, the 296 GTB. It has sharp, angular headlamps and a low bonnet line and sleek, curvaceous body panels. Giant air vents at the B-pillar let you in on its mid-rear engine layout. At the rear, narrow taillamps sit just below the functional rear wing. In stock form, the wing can provide up to 100kg of downforce to the rear wheels. You can also opt for the Assetto Fiorano aero package for 360kg of downforce.
Ferrari says that the 296 GTS’s lightweight hartop roof takes merely 14 seconds to retract, and it can be operated at speeds up to 45kmph. It’s split into two sections and has been engineered so that it doesn’t interfere with the engine’s cooling system.

Speaking of the engine, the 296 GTS is powered by Ferrari’s 120-degree V6 petrol unit that houses its turbochargers within the V-angle for better performance and efficiency. On its own, the 3-litre engine makes 663PS power and comes paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).
A 167PS electric motor boosts the overall performance to 830PS and 740Nm – enough to get you from 0-100kmph in just 2.9 seconds. Flat out, the Ferrari 296 GTS can hit 200kmph in just 7.6 seconds! It even stops as well as it propels you towards the horizon – a full stop from 200kmph takes an astonishing 107 metres.
We expect the plug-in hybrid supercar to make its way to India in the future. It’ll likely be preceded by the 296 GTB that’s already on sale in other countries. It’s likely to carry a multi-crore price tag between Rs 5 crore and Rs 6 crore (ex-showroom).
