Hyundai has given its flagship sedan, the Grandeur, a proper makeover for its seventh generational update in the international markets. Also conceived as the Hyundai Azera in a few markets, the sedan is an exact embodiment of its name - grand. Because it is that in every sense of the word, especially in its latest avatar.
That heading might be a bit misleading, because the exterior design is a clean one. Rather, it is the size that’s really grand. The stretched wheelbase and positioning of the C-pillar give the sedan a sense of generous proportions that directly translates to grand-ness inside the cabin, but we’ll get to that a bit later.
The front fascia, which takes inspiration from the Staria MPV’s space-age design, is made up of the Hyundai’s massive parametric grille that takes up most of the space. It is flanked by rectangular-shaped headlights, and a thin LED line runs across the bonnet. Draw a line from the end of the LED strip across the smooth-flowing doors, and you’ll converge with the tail light; that too is a single strip of LED spanning across the rear, extending to the sides.
Hyundai has been upping its game when it comes to cabin layout and feel. Take the Ioniq 5 for instance, with its spacious and eco-friendly cabin. That philosophy has been carried over for the Grandeur, which also gets sustainable materials all around. The upright roofline incorporates a feeling of free headroom for the rear passengers, something that’s always short compared to the front row.
The steering takes inspiration from the first-gen model with its single-spoke design, and integrates modern touches and technology, including a single-pane digital driver’s display and an infotainment system behind it. The use of wood, aluminum, and naturally dyed Napa leather, quilted in a traditional Korean grain, further aids the luxury quota of the sedan’s cabin. Grand indeed.
Hyundai hasn’t given any information about what powerhouse the Grandeur will get, but going by the design and overall gist of the sedan, we expect the powertrain options to include a pure petrol-powered variant and maybe a petrol-hybrid powertrain. We’ll just have to wait and see.
It is unlikely that the Hyundai Grandeur will be brought to India, given that none of the previous generations have made their way to our shores. Its shots would be aimed towards the likes of luxury sedans like the Audi A8L, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series.
