Tata Tiago EV vs Tata Punch EV: Real-world Range Comparison

Tata is clearly at the forefront of the ongoing transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in India. It already has the most number of EVs for any mass-market carmaker, from the Tata Tiago EV to the Tata Nexon EV.

We recently tested the Tata Punch EV for its real-world range and in this story, we are going to compare our results against the real-world range of the Tiago EV. In both cases, we tested the Long Range variants of both models which get the bigger battery packs.  Here’s a quick spec check before comparing their real-world range figures:

Specification check

The Punch EV LR boasts a bigger 35kWh battery pack, compared to the Tiago LR’s 24kWh pack. As a result, the micro SUV also promises a significantly bigger range number. But the question is, how big is the difference going to be in the real world? Let’s find out:

Real-world range

Juiced up to the brim with 100 percent charge displayed on the instrument cluster, both cars were driven around the city, like any normal person would. To keep the parameters as realistic as possible, no hard acceleration or hypermiling was permitted, and the AC was being used continuously, to battle our summer heat. 

No surprise that the Punch EV clocked more distance with 259 km on a full charge. The Tiago EV on the other hand managed 215 kms, which is still pretty impressive. The 106 km difference between their claimed ranges drops down to just 44km in the real world. So, the 45 percent difference in battery size lends the Punch EV an advantage of just 20 percent more range in the real world. Mind you, the Punch EV was tested in rather torrid conditions, so we do expect it to do slightly better on a normal day. 

Price

The Punch EV LR variants are priced between Rs 10.99 lakh and Rs 15.49 lakh, while the Tiago EV LR variants start from Rs 9.99 lakh and go up to Rs 11.89 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). You also get a lot more creature comforts in the top-spec Punch EV than the top-spec Tiago EV, which will also play a role in deciding between these two green cars.

The Tata Punch EV rivals the likes of the Citroen eC3, while also being an alternative to the Tata Tigor EV, Tata Tiago EV and even the Tata Nexon EV’s mid-range variants. The Tiago EV, on the other hand, takes on the MG Comet EV and Citroen eC3.
