Kia Carens Clavis EV: Check Out What’s Good And Not So Good About The Electric MPV

Kia recently introduced its first all-electric mass-market MPV in India, the Carens Clavis EV. Priced from Rs 17.99 lakh (ex-showroom), it offers a claimed range of up to 490 km. The Clavis EV is available with two battery pack options and comes in three broad trims. 

That said, it is not without its compromises. From everyday practicality to a few feature omissions, the Clavis EV has some aspects that might make you think twice. Here’s a closer look at what the Clavis EV gets right, and where it could do better.

Kia Carens Clavis EV: Design 

The Clavis EV keeps its ICE-powered sibling’s clean proportions and styling but gets some EV-specific touches. You will now find connected LED DRLs, fog lamps, and a closed-off grille with a charging flap. The Ivory Silver Matte exterior shade stands out for its premium feel, while 17-inch aero-styled alloys complete its appearance. One neat trick is the active front cooling flaps, they open when the motor needs to cool and shut for better aerodynamics once optimal temps are reached.

One downside in its styling is that Kia could have added dynamic turn indicators to complement the modern lighting setup. Additionally, the overall rear profile remains largely unchanged, apart from the missing tailpipe.

Kia Carens Clavis EV: Interior And Comfort

Step inside the Clavis EV, and it immediately feels upmarket. It features a dual-tone colour scheme, leatherette upholstery, and a minimalist dashboard with soft fabric inserts. Panel fit and finish are consistent, and there's plenty of space to stretch out. 

Front-row comfort is solid, with well-cushioned seats and generous room that even tall occupants will not feel cramped. The second row remains flexible, offering sliding and reclining seats without compromising under-thigh support. As for the third row, it is usable for adults, offering decent cushioning, reclining function, and adequate head and knee-room for average-height passengers.

While cabin quality is impressive overall, the plastics used in the lower console do not quite match the premium feel seen elsewhere. In the second row, despite all the thoughtful touches, the absence of cup holders feels like an odd miss, especially for a car focused on practicality. Also, seat ventilation is limited to the front row. And while third-row access is manageable, it still requires a full tumble action which might not be the most convenient every time.

Kia Carens Clavis EV: Features

Pros – Kia’s approach aims for a feature-rich cabin. You get ventilated front seats, a powered driver seat with recline and sliding function, dual 12.25-inch screens with sharp resolution, and a touch-based climate and media control panel. There is also ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and an 8-speaker Bose system that adds to the premium feel. It also gets a wireless phone charger, and multiple 12V sockets. On the safety front, the Clavis EV gets six airbags, 360-degree camera system, parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring system, and ADAS.

Cons – There’s no wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay on offer, which feels like a miss at this price point. And while a power tailgate would have rounded out the package nicely, its absence is not a dealbreaker.

Kia Carens Clavis EV: Powertrain

Pros – The Carens Clavis EV shares its electric motor and battery setup with the Hyundai Creta EV. It is available with either a 42 kWh battery pack paired with a 135 PS electric powertrain, or a 51.4 kWh battery pack paired with a 171 PS electric powertrain. Power delivery is smooth and silent, offering an effortless EV driving experience.

Gear selection is via a steering-mounted stalk, which helps keep the centre console clutter-free. The claimed range is up to 490 km, though you can expect around 360 km in real-world conditions with the larger battery pack.

Cons – While the range is decent for daily drives and weekend getaways, long-distance usability still remains limited. This is especially important to consider when there is no access to fast chargers. Also, its variants are significantly more expensive than the ICE-powered Carens Clavis.

Kia Carens Clavis EV: Ride

Pros – Ride comfort has always been a Carens strength, and thankfully, that’s been carried over with Clavis EV as well. Its suspension feels plush and handles bad roads well. Despite the extra battery weight, the Clavis EV remains composed, maintaining the calm driving experience EV buyers expect.

Cons – Compared to its ICE-powered siblings, the suspension is slightly firmer. However, this does not translate to discomfort, as it is even over rough surfaces.

Rivals

The Kia Carens Clavis EV steps into a unique space. It does not have a direct rival, but closely takes on the BYD e-Max 7. And if you are cross-shopping, it is an electric alternative to hybrid MPVs like the Maruti Invicto and Toyota Innova Hycross. At the same time, its pricing and feature set bring it head-to-head with electric compact SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta EV, MG ZS EV, Tata Harrier EV, Mahindra BE6, and the upcoming Maruti e-Vitara.

Is the Kia Carens Clavis EV the Right Choice for You?

If you're after a spacious, feature-rich family car and prefer an electric powertrain, the Clavis EV could be the right fit. It combines MPV practicality with the efficiency and smoothness of an EV, all while offering seating for seven.

That said, it might not be ideal for long-distance road trips just yet. But for city commutes, everyday rides, and short weekend getaways, the Clavis EV makes a smart and sensible choice.
