5 Things We Loved About The MG M9's Rear Seat!

We’ve seen plenty of new EVs this year, but every once in a while, one comes along that makes you want to forget the spec sheet for a second and just sit back. Literally.

The MG M9 is one of those. Sure, it looks sharp from the outside and is packed to the roof with screens and sensors up front. But once you slide into the second row, and maybe even sneak a quick test nap in the third, the focus quickly shifts. This isn’t just an electric MPV with fancy lights and voice commands. It’s a space that’s clearly been designed for people who’d rather be driven than do the driving.

Expected to go on sale sometime in July 2025, the M9 takes a slightly different approach to what a premium people-mover should feel like. So we ditched the driver’s seat for a bit and spent some time in the back rows. Here’s what stood out:

1. The Second Row Feels Properly Premium

The M9 ditches the usual bench seat in favour of two large, individual ottoman chairs. And that changes everything. These aren’t just big, they’re soft, supportive, and come with generous recline options. You sit down, sink in, and immediately feel like you’ve boarded a business-class cabin.

There’s also a centre armrest with cupholders and storage, plus individual climate controls, which always help avoid that awkward “it’s too cold / it’s too hot” argument. Did I tell you there’s even a massage function?

2. The Third Row Is Surprisingly Usable

Most of us have sat in third rows that felt like a last-minute idea, knees up, back straight, and zero legroom. But the M9’s third row doesn’t feel like punishment. Adults can actually sit there for more than 10 minutes without regret. 

There’s enough legroom, the seat base is decently long, and you even get a recline function and dedicated AC vents. It's one of the rare occasions where the third row doesn’t feel like a compromise.

3. You Won’t Be Short On Storage

People-movers need to, well, move people and their stuff. And MG seems to get that. Whether you’re in the middle row or at the back, there’s no shortage of pockets, trays, and charging ports. 

There are cupholders tucked into clever places, seatback trays, a rear wireless charging pad, and just enough space to stash your everyday carry. It’s all very practical without trying too hard.

4. Rear Seat Entertainment Comes Standard

Built-in rear seat entertainment is usually reserved for higher-end variants or optional packs, but the M9 offers it as standard. You get touchscreen displays mounted behind the front seats, and while we didn’t have time to try out every feature, they seem good enough to keep both kids and grown-ups occupied on long drives.

Handy, especially when the front screen is being monopolised by maps or music.

5. Second Row Passengers Have More Power Than You’d Think

Okay, I do not mean it in a political sense, but the second-row passengers get their own touchscreen controller that lets them adjust just about everything, the AC, music, lights, sunroof, even some of the rear entertainment features. Something we have seen on the Toyota Vellfire, which we recently tested.

It’s one of those small touches that make a big difference. You don’t need to ask the driver for every little thing; you’re in control of your own little cabin.

Final Thoughts

While you will have to wait for the full review of the MG M9, its rear seat experience makes a strong first impression. It’s comfortable, well thought out, and offers just enough features without overcomplicating things. If you’re the kind of person who prefers being chauffeured or just values second-row comfort more than horsepower, the M9 might be worth keeping an eye on.
