It has been spied for the first time in India
Expected to launch in mid-2026
Could be priced at around Rs 1.70 lakh (ex-showroom)
Yamaha seems to be flirting with the idea of finally getting down and dirty, as the long-awaited WR155 R has been spotted testing in Bengaluru, that too, completely undisguised. Is it coming to India? And if yes, when? Here’s all you need to know:
The Yamaha WR155 R you see here looks identical to the model sold in Indonesia. It is finished in Yamaha’s iconic Racing Blue paint scheme and has the same rugged, purposeful design. The temporary Karnataka registration plate suggests this could either be a test mule or a bike brought in for promotional work, possibly a TVC shoot, given the multiple Yamaha two-wheelers it was seen with.
That said, there’s a good chance this particular unit is a direct import for testing and evaluation, and if things go well, it could imply a launch some time in the future - say around 2026. Nonetheless, it’s an encouraging sight for enthusiasts who’ve been craving something more adventure-oriented from Yamaha, especially since the Tenere 700 remains a far-fetched dream.

Adding to the buzz, Yamaha recently sent out invites asking the media to block November 11, hinting at a major product launch. While some might speculate the WR155 R could be part of that event, it’s far more likely that the date is reserved for the much-awaited XSR155, which has also been spied testing in India. However, Yamaha might just tease off-road fans with an unveiling at the event, if we’re lucky.
Globally, the WR155 R has cult status among dual-sport fans for its versatility. The bike has a semi-double-cradle frame with long-travel suspension. Its 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels, with knobbies give it true off-road proportions, while the massive 245mm ground clearance and a towering 880mm seat height ensure a go-anywhere stance.

Powering the WR155 R is the same 155cc liquid-cooled engine that we know and love from the R15 and MT-15. Internationally, it makes around 16.5PS and 14.3Nm, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. It’s been tuned for better low and mid-range grunt to take on the roads untravelled. Dial in the light 134kg kerb weight, we reckon it will be a riot to ride.
With GST 2.0 benefits now making sub-350cc bikes cheaper, Yamaha might see this as the perfect time to test the waters in the dual-sport segment. Afterall, even the obscenely priced Kawasaki KLX230 received a price revision, and then recently, another price cut (due to GST 2.0). The WR155 R could be Yamaha’s way of entering the growing lightweight dual-sport segment, which is currently dominated by Hero and Kawasaki.

If Yamaha decides to greenlight local assembly, then we expect the WR155 R to be priced around Rs 1.70 lakh (ex-showroom), a neat middleground between the Xpulse 210 (priced from Rs 1,62,065 ex-showroom) and Kawasaki KLX230 (priced at Rs 1,84,000 ex-showroom). While it’s still too early for official timelines, a mid-2026 launch wouldn’t be unrealistic if Yamaha sees that there’s enough market demand for a 155cc dual-sport.
Note: Always wear certified riding gear while on a two-wheeler, and remember, your phone call can wait. Never use it while riding.
