All three German performance brands now offer pure-electric thrills, but which one is better on paper? We find out.

The EV market in India is nascent, but the luxury end of the space is already seeing a storm of competitors. Most recently, Mercedes had entered the performance mix with the launch of the AMG EQS 53 to take on the Porsche Taycan and Audi RS e-tron GT. While not exactly the same, they’re all similar at their core: fast, luxurious and electric. Let’s see how each of them compares on paper:

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 is the longest electric sedan on sale in India. Its wheelbase is nearly a foot longer than that of the Porsche Taycan and Audi RS e-tron GT both of which have the same platform. However, the Taycan is the widest and lowest with the sportiest stance.

All three of these luxury performance electric sedans are very well equipped. They come with air suspension, rear-wheel steering, driver-assist suite, plush upholstery and many screens. The EQS 53 AMG has the most futuristic cabin with its MBUX Hyperscreen on the dashboard and ambient lighting setup, while the RS e-tron GT’s cabin seems the most conventional.

Meanwhile, the Taycan has the most number of screens with a driver-centric layout. Of the three, the Mercedes is the only one with a proper three-seat layout in the back while the other two have sporty seats in the rear that are suitable for only two occupants.

All three sedans pack dual-motor AWD powertrains, but the Taycan Turbo S, predictably, offers the most performance and is also the quickest. Mercedes is offering the AMG EQS 53 with the Dynamic Package as standard in India. Its peak output is on a par with the Turbo S on overboost, but the larger battery and bigger size hinder its outright performance.

The Audi RS e-tron GT is no slouch but it does fall behind these two in the numbers game by over 100PS and around 200Nm. With its weight of around 2400kg, the lighter Audi is still quicker to 100kmph than the 2.6-ton AMG EQS 53.

The larger battery of the EQS 53 shines through in this context as the Mercedes offers a lot more range than the Audi and the Porsche. Its WLTP-rated range is 166km higher than that of the Taycan Turbo S which has similar performance. Meanwhile, the RS e-tron GT with its relatively lower performance still falls short of the Mercedes-AMG electric sedan by around 100km.

The Taycan and e-tron GT have an edge in terms of charging capabilities thanks to the 800V electrical architecture. They can handle up to 270kW of fast charging while the EQS can only handle 200kW.

Rs 2.05 crore

All three of these models are offered as fully-built imports in India. The AMG EQS 53 is the priciest one here but it also gets a lot of equipment as standard. Even though the Taycan Turbo S has a lower starting price, we expect the final bill after optional equipment to be similar to that of the Mercedes luxury EV.

Meanwhile, the Audi RS e-tron GT seems to be a bit of a bargain as an electric performance EV sedan. However, a model unit with all the optional extras to make it the best it can be, would likely reach the Rs 2.5 crore mark as well.

In case you only want the luxury and the styling of these EVs and not the extreme performance, fret not, Audi can offer you the e-tron GT with the same battery pack and more range.

Meanwhile, the Taycan can also be had in a different body type called the Cross Turismo for increased luggage room. Mercedes will be launching the EQS 580 in India in September as a locally assembled model, making it more affordable while still offering over 600km of range.
