Royal Enfield Unveils Classic 500 Pegasus Edition

Interested in owning a piece of history? You're in luck. Royal Enfield has just taken the wraps off a limited-edition motorcycle called the Classic 500 Pegasus. Designed to pay homage to the British paratroopers of World War II, the Pegasus edition is based on the Royal Enfield Classic 500 and will sport a retro military design reminiscent of two-stroke motorcycles used in WWII. Only 1,000 units of the motorcycle will be manufactured, out of which 250 units will be made available in India.

The limited-edition model draws inspiration from the RE/WD 125 bikes that were used during the many battles of WWII. Commonly known as the Flying Flea, these motorcycles used to be air-dropped via parachutes directly behind the enemy lines and were used by paratroopers for running communication and support lines.

The Pegasus edition features a couple of cosmetic changes such as Pegasus logo on the fuel tank, which will carry a unique serial number stencilled on it, and a set of military-style canvas panniers. It will also ditch the standard chrome inserts found on the Classic 500 for blacked out elements on the exhaust muffler, engine rims, handlebar and the headlight bezel.

The motorcycle will be sold in two distinct colours used by the Flying Fleas - Service Brown and Olive Dab Green. However, only the Service Brown colour scheme will be sold in India. The engine case and the swingarm will also be painted in the same shade as the body colour.

Powering the motorcycle is the same engine that is seen on the standard Classic 500. This 499cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine churns out 28PS of power at 5250rpm and 41.3Nm of torque at 4000rpm.

The Pegasus edition will retail for GBP 4,999 (around Rs 4.5 lakh), with bookings set to commence online from July. While Royal Enfield hasn’t disclosed the Classic 500 Pegasus Edition’s India prices, we expect it to cost around Rs 30,000 more than the standard Classic 500 model, which retails for Rs 1.68 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Royal Enfield will also offer a limited range of gear, inspired by the motorcycle. This includes shirts, t-shirts, caps, lapel pins, bags and helmets. These accessories will be adorned by military insignia and the Pegasus emblem.
