Indians have always loved small cars, and most of all small cars from our very own Indo-Japanese manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki. The company recently launched a tall and upright hatchback called the S-Presso. It demands a small premium over the Alto K10, and starts from Rs 3.69 lakh all the way up to Rs 4.91 lakh.

On the outside, it’s clear that the car is a raised hatchback. The layout provides two primary merits – better suspension travel, and improved ingress and egress.

From the front, the trapezoidal headlamps are complemented by a grille which resembles the Brezza’s, giving this car some personality. The only chrome bits in the fascia are in the grille, and they are available as an accessory.

Even though the car barely looks like the Future-S concept, the S-Presso has a restrained and sober look to it. The SUV aspirations are quite apparent when seen from the front quarter – a tall stance and a butch fascia, with stamped wheel arches on the fenders. There is a component of fakery, but it is limited to the indicator/DRL impressions in the plastic bumper. DRLs are available as an accessory.

The 14-inch steel rims with full wheel covers (alloys optional) are among the largest in the small hatchback segment. 165/70 R14 tyres are a decent compromise between comfort and appearance. However, the wheel arches are simply cavernous with exposed weld lines. The standard model gets 145/80 R13 tyres with hubcaps, which would underutilize the driving dynamics of the chassis compared to the other two variants.

The rear gets large taillamps and a protruding boot. The car has been constructed to demonstrate Maruti’s packaging abilities. The S-Presso’s boot can hold 270 litres of luggage in the boot. This is just 9 litres less than the Kwid, and nearly 100 litres more than the Alto 800.

On the inside, the S-Presso offers seating for five. The front and rear seats get fixed headrests to save costs. Two cupholders up front and the door pockets offer adequate storage in the front row.

The dashboard looks refreshing, with a large orange ring flanked by angular air vents. Available on the VXi+ trim, the ring can be had in silver or orange. The top readouts are the drivers’ information display – a digital speedometer and fuel gauge, along with error lights. Below it sits a 7-inch touchscreen, which comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Front power window controls are present near the bottom of the ring next to the hazard light control. The steering gets audio and phone controls. These add a lot of modern functionality to the S-Presso.

The car comes with a BS6-compliant version of Maruti’s K10B 3-cylinder DOHC engine. It makes 68PS and 90Nm of torque, but the low weight of the S-Presso – between 726kg and 767kg – makes the engine quite an exciting addition to the car. Fuel economy is rated at 21.7kmpl for the VXi variants (manual and AGS), and 21.4kmpl for the standard model.

Maruti’s new HEARTECT platform gives the S-Presso some much-needed and highly anticipated driving dynamics. The featherweight chassis has 40 per cent high-strength steel. Plus, the rear suspension bids adieu to trailing arms and in come torsion beams. Maruti is known for making good-handling, small and inexpensive cars, and this has the hardware to be the best of the bunch.
