India's best selling hatchback for 15 years finally gets a touchscreen infotainment system

  • Gets a 7-inch SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Remains relatively unchanged in terms of features.
  • Priced at a Rs 13,000 premium over the VXI.
  • Takes on the likes of the Renault Kwid as well as the Datsun Redi-GO.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto has been an icon for the carmaker and India, with the hatchback celebrating 15 years of being the best seller in its segment and recording sales of 38 lakh units since its launch in 2000. The current-gen Alto received a facelift back in April this year with safety upgrades. It is also one of the first Maruti vehicles in India alongside the Baleno to be upgraded to meet BS6 emission norms. And it doesn’t end there, as the carmaker has rounded off the year with the launch of a new top-spec VXI+ variant of the Alto hatchback at Rs 3.80 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Here’s a look at the total variants on offer:

With the addition of the VXI+ variant, the Alto not only gets all the equipment from the VXI variant, but it also comes equipped with a 7-inch Smartplay touchscreen infotainment system, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The VXI+ comes at a premium of Rs 13,000 over the VXI variant, which is mostly down to the touchscreen infotainment system. It remains relatively unchanged on the inside with a dual-tone cabin.

Under the hood, the Alto VXI+ retains the BS6-compliant 796cc, 3-cylinder petrol mill, delivering 47PS/69Nm as well as a fuel efficiency of 22.05kmpl. Safety features in the Alto include dual-front airbags, ABS+EBD, reverse parking sensors, speed alert and seatbelt warning for driver and co-passenger.

With the long-awaited addition of the touchscreen infotainment system, the Alto has adapted well with the likes of modern hatchbacks and takes on the likes of the Renault Kwid and the Datsun Redi-GO in India. While this is a good Christmas/New Year surprise from the carmaker, it would be great if we can finally get an automatic option to put the cherry on the cake.
