With a more powerful engine under the hood, does the Ertiga have enough oomph to take on its competition? Let’s find out

Amidst all the talk surrounding the future of diesel cars in the country and Maruti’s surprise decision to axe all diesel engines from its lineup by April 2020, the carmaker has updated the Ertiga with a more powerful diesel motor.  It has plonked the new 1.5-litre DDiS 225 engine which debuted with the Ciaz in March under the hood of its hot selling MPV. With the launch of the Ertiga equipped with the DDiS 225 engine, it must be mentioned that the variants powered by the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS 200 engine will now be axed. Also, the base LDi variant of the Ertiga has been given the boot and the diesel variants now start from the mid-spec Ertiga VDi. Apart from the new heart and revised variant lineup, the Ertiga remains unchanged. So for this analysis, we will only be comparing the mechanical bits and the price you need to pay for getting one. Most Fuel Efficient : Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

The Ertiga’s new 1.5-litre DDiS 225 motor produces 95PS and 225Nm of torque, which is 5PS and 25Nm more than what the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS 200 engine produces. While the DDiS 225 power output is not class leading, it trumps the 85PS Lodgy and the BR-V in terms of torque. The BR-V though edges past the Ertiga, producing 5PS more power. The Renault Lodgy dCi 85PS is the least powerful here, but makes the same amount of torque as the BR-V i-DTEC. The Renault Lodgy 110PS plays the middle ground here with its higher-spec 1.5-litre dCi motor that produces 240Nm of torque. Churning out 123PS of power and 300Nm of torque, the Marazzo is the most powerful of this lot. All these cars are mated to a 6-speed manual transmission except for the Lodgy dCi 85PS, which employs a 5-speed MT.

Talking about drinking problems, the Marazzo is the thirstiest of this lot returning just 17.6kmpl. Taking up third position is the Lodgy dCi 110PS that returns 19.98kmpl. It’s a close fight between the Renault Lodgy 85PS and BR-V i-DTEC as both of them are separated by a slim margin. The pole position goes to the Ertiga, which takes you the furthest with an average claimed fuel efficiency of 24.20kmpl. However, this figure is lower than the 1.3-litre DDiS engine which had a claimed fuel efficiency of 25.47kmpl on the Ertiga. The DDiS 225 also misses out on Suzuki’s Smart Hybrid technology which was offered with the smaller engine.

Price (ex-Showroom, Delhi)

Rs 10.18 to Rs 14.59 lakh

Rs 8.63 lakh to Rs 11.30 lakh

Rs 12.11 lakh

11.86 lakh to Rs 13.61 lakh

If you want a basic MPV at the lowest price point in this comparo, the Lodgy dCi 85PS makes for a good bet thanks to its low starting price. The Renault MPV also offers you plenty of seating options. It can be had in either a 7- or an 8-seat layout. But if you want a Lodgy dCi 110PS, then you need to shell out more as the 110PS variant is available only in the top-end variant. The same can’t be said about the BR-V. It’s higher entry level price makes it a stretch for those looking for a decently equipped MPV in the range of Rs 10 lakh. Also Honda is set to pull the plug on the BR-V soon due to its dismal sales. The Marazzo and Ertiga make a compelling case for themselves. The Ertiga has the most affordable top-end variant and if you are looking for a loaded car within a budget, then the Ertiga is the best bet. Also the entry-level variant of the Ertiga DDiS 225 is based on the mid-spec VDi variant now, thereby offering you plenty of value for money. But the Marazzo being a fantastic all rounder, is too hard for us to not consider. Powerful engine, loaded to the gills and being the biggest one here, the Marazzo is the one you could go for if budget is no bar. Yes, the top-end variant is the priciest one here, but it also comes with the most amount of features and is the most powerful of the lot as well.
