Big, Boxy And A Plug-in Hybrid: Is This JSW Motor’s First SUV? Jetour T2 Spied In India!

If you aren’t aware yet, JSW is set to launch their automotive brand in India in the coming months. While they already operate MG cars in India, they have been talking about coming as a separate brand called JSW Motors. And JSW Motors’ first car will be the Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid SUV, which is already on sale in other Asian markets. With it getting ready to launch in India, we have spotted it being tested on our roads. Here’s what we can see:

What We Can See

Exterior

The spy pictures clearly indicate that the styling of the India-spec Jetour will be pretty much unchanged, with perhaps minor tweaks to give it some unique touches for the JSW brand. 

The Jetour T2 has a boxy upright stance, thanks to the upright fascia, the long bonnet and the fairly upright windscreen. The LED headlamp design is retained with the integrated LED DRLs.

Lower down, the Jetour T2 has old-school-like chunky bumpers with integrated LED fog lamps. Notice that there are vertical, pixel-like front design lamps on the bumper as well.

The side profile is also carried over from the Jetour T2. That means the boxy styling theme continues here with the low window line and the large window openings. Lower down, we see the chunky foot steps which aid getting in and out of this tall SUV. Alongside this, the wheel arch cladding continues the chunky design to the bumpers on either side. Also notice the chunky roof rails, which give this SUV an extra rugged presence.

The rear end of the JSW’s upcoming SUV has the typical classic SUV styling thanks to the side-hinged tailgate and the spare wheel mounted to it. The vertical LED tail lamps sit on either side of the rear end.

Meanwhile, the rugged theme is carried here as well thanks to the pronounced rear bumpers.

Interior

The Jetour T2, like any modern SUV, has a large touchscreen infotainment display on the short and layered dashboard. The rugged design theme is carried over here as well thanks to the prominent AC vents, which have a metallic silver finish. Interestingly, the gear selector gets a jewel-like finish as well, elevating the premiumness in the cabin. 

While we can’t see much happening in the cabin, we can also make out that it has a predominantly black-themed interior with red stitching.

Expected Features And Safety

The JSW Jetour T2 is expected to get features like a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital driver’s display, and a premium sound system. 

We also expect features like auto climate control, wireless charging, multiple drive modes, a panoramic sunroof, and connected car technology.

Safety-wise, we expect upwards of six airbags, ABS with EBD, hill-hold control (HHC), hill-descent control (HDC), a 360-degree camera and ADAS features. 

Expected Drivetrain Options

The Jetour T2 will be available with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox. The plug-in-hybrid SUV will also be powered by an electric powertrain, including an 18.4 kWh battery pack.

DCT - Dual-Clutch Transmission

The depicted powertrain numbers are ballpark figures and are yet to be officially announced for the India-spec models.

Expected Price And Rivals

JSW’s first SUV will be priced from Rs 20 to Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom). It will directly go against the likes of the recently launched MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV, and the Mahindra XEV 9e on the EV side.

It will also go against the Toyota Innova Hycross, Maruti Invicto.

The introduction of more brands and models is spicing up the Indian automotive market like it has ever seen before. Although the new models are basically Chinese-manufactured models, they are highly competent when it comes to the price-to-features-to-size ratio. And this is true of the rest of the global automotive market.

Meanwhile, do note that the upcoming plug-in hybrid SUV by JSW is most likely not going to be called the Jetour T2, which is its original name. However, the SUV is set to be largely manufactured in India with an Indian name under the JSW brand. And with the Jetour T2, it will go against people who like to have a rugged-looking lifestyle SUV with modern comfort and features.
