Mahindra Two Wheelers Limited is said to be in talks of buying a venerable British motorcycle brand. As per uncorfirmed reports, renowned brands like Norton and BSA are being considered by the Indian firm for acquisition. Mahindra has been well accepted in the passenger car and tractor market in India. However, it has not been that fortunate when it comes to two-wheelers.
Mahindra marked its entry into the two-wheeler market in 2010 by purchasing the Kinetic brand with a 80 per cent stake. Last year, the company also acquired a 51 per cent controlling stake in Peugeot Motorcycle. Mahindra has introduced scooters and bikes in the Indian market but has not been able to rack up good numbers.
For Mahindra, purchasing a British brand will provide the company attention in other international markets where the international brand already has a reputation. It will allow entry in the higher displacement category of motorcycles with inputs in technology and manufacturing techniques from its in-house R&D and Peugeot.
Although nothing has been finalised yet, it seems that Mahindra has had discussions with both BSA and Norton, and a confirmed agreement is likely to be expected in three to six months. In India, Mahindra currently sells the Gusto, Duro, Rodeo, Centuro and Mojo in the two wheeler market.
