It will be a part of Hyundai’s vast future roadmap for fuel cell EVs

After releasing a teaser a couple of weeks ago, Hyundai has unleashed a new sports car concept called the Vision FK. What’s special about this one is that it’ll run on hydrogen, and is a part of Hyundai’s Hydrogen Vision 2040 roadmap.

The most eye-catching part of the Vision FK is of course under the hood. It combines a fuel cell energy converter with a rear-wheel-drive plug-in EV powertrain from Rimac to deliver over 680PS of outright punch. This is enough to accelerate it from 0-100kmph in under 4 seconds, and still keep it running for up to 600km.

While the model is still wrapped in heavy camo it looks sporty with an aggressive front end, slim headlights, meaty alloy wheels, and a closed body style (fastback).

Unfortunately, that’s all Hyundai has shared about the Vision FK Concept, but it could hit production soon, considering how production-ready it already looks. When it goes into production, it could be a sportier alternative to the Toyota Mirai FCEV.

That aside, the carmaker also revealed other mobility concepts including the Trailer Drone, Fuel Cell e-Bogie, Rescue Drone, H Moving Station, and the RHGV (Rescue Hydrogen Generator Vehicle), all of which preview Hyundai’s Hydrogen Vision 2040 roadmap.

As per this strategy, the carmaker aims to have its entire commercial model lineup to have hydrogen or battery-powered options by 2028. Hyundai plans to introduce a next-gen fuel cell system in 2023 which will be offered in 100kW and 200kW guises. Via this strategy, the carmaker believes that the price point of FCEVs will be comparable to a battery electric vehicle (BEV) by 2030.

This roadmap falls in line with Hyundai’s recent announcement of only offering zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) in Europe from 2035 onwards. This is followed by a complete switchover by 2040 in all major markets that support clean mobility. Currently, Hyundai only has the Nexo as its FCEV offering, with the Kona EV and the IONIQ 5 being its all-electric offerings. Hyundai is planning on expanding its BEV lineup with the IONIQ 6 as its next offering.

Back home, we already have the Kona EV, and the carmaker is contemplating bringing the Nexo FCEV here as it has been registered with the Delhi RTO.
