Citroen’s first product for India will be launched in 2020. Here’s how it compares to its potential segment rivals

Citroen C5 Aircross vs Competition

They say that second time’s a charm, and that’s exactly what Groupe PSA is hoping for when it launches the Citroen brand here in India by 2020. And what better way to lead the charge than by launching the C5 Aircross that promises to be a cool, comfortable and clever SUV in the premium compact SUV segment. Here’s how the C5 Aircross compares against its competition - the Jeep Compass and the Hyundai Tucson - on paper.

Prices

(expected price)
Hyundai Tucson Jeep Compass
Price Range Rs 18-25 lakh Rs 18.74-26.95 lakh RS 15.40-22.90 lakh

The Citroen C5 Aircross is unlikely to be priced aggressively in the segment, what with plans of assembling it here from CKD (completely knocked down) kits. It is expected to be placed in between the popular Jeep Compass and the not-so-popular Hyundai Tucson. The Aircross sold in the UK gets features like progressive hydraulic cushions, a fully digital instrument cluster and park assist, among others. However, whether these features make it to the India-spec SUV remains to be seen.

Citroen C5 Aircross vs Competition

The Citroen C5 is the biggest SUV in the comparison and could make it quite appealing to customers in this segment. Combine the extra space with some clever interior packaging, customisable rear seating and practical luggage space and you’ve got a very attractive family vehicle.

Most Powerful: Citroen C5 Aircross
Torquiest: Citroen C5 Aircross, Jeep Compass

Petrol-powered vehicles are expected to become popular in 2020, especially since the prices of diesel SUVs expected to soar after the implementation of BSVI norms. All the SUVs in this comparison are offered with petrol engines but the Citroen’s is the most powerful and shares the highest torque figures with the Jeep Compass. The Compass develops this high torque figure from the smallest displacement engine in the comparison. The Citroen C5 is also available with a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, but that is unlikely to make it to India. The 8-speed automatic transmission offered in the Citroen should help make it more economical too.

All the diesel engines in this comparison have very similar displacements, and the Hyundai Tucson’s powerplant is the most powerful and torquiest among them. The Citroen C5’s gearbox has more cogs, which should make it more economical.
