Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records. - William Arthus Ward

With the 2018 event coming to a close, we witnessed a number of records being broken, so we list this year's record breaking riders of the Isle of Man TT.

Peter Hickman (Senior TT) - Lap time:16:42.778 Record: 217.989kmph

Lincolnshire rider Peter Hickman smashed the course record and took his first Senior TT win on 8 June with a blistering lap over the Mountain Course at over 217.989kmph.

Harrison’s performance has been sensational in every race this week, and it wasn’t any different at the Senior TT as he led the way at Glen Helen right from the beginning with a 1.2 second lead over Hickman with Michael Dunlop not far behind in third.

Harrison continued to push with a 1.4 second lead over Hickman towards the end of the 60.72km course, which then stretched to 5.5 seconds on lap two. Although, in a turn of events, Hickman managed to close the gap to 1.4 seconds with an epic run over the Mountain course before they came into the pits for the first time.

Smiths BMW had a slow pitstop, which worked in Harrison's favour as he further stretched his lead to a staggering 8.2 seconds in the third lap. Nevertheless, Hickman wasn’t about to give up and eked out every ounce of power the BMW had to provide, which helped him further reduce the gap over the Mountain Course and set a new lap record of 217.989kmph.

The fierce battle between the two riders continued till the last lap with just 1.9 seconds separating the two. Hickman finally took the lead from Harrison between Ballaugh and Ramsey after which he never looked behind. With a 2 second lead over Harrison, Hickman crossed the finish line with a jaw-dropping average speed of 217.988kmph.

Dean Harrison, who rides for Silicone Engineering Kawasaki, shattered the record in the RST Superbike TT race on the 2 June. From the very beginning, Harrison lapped the course at an incredible 16:50.384 with an average lap pace of 134.432mph / 216.347kmph. The very first 216kmph+ lap in TT history and a new record for 2018.

Michael Dunlop (Supersport) - Lap time:17:31.328 Record:207.922kmph

Michael Dunlop annihilated his very own five-year-old circuit record at an amazing 207.922kmph. While the previous record stood at 207.067kmph. Surprisingly enough the record was set while he was slowing down to enter the pits.

Peter Hickman (Superstock) - Lap time: 16:50.501 Record: 216.300kmph

Hickman’s second lap on the course clocked an average pace of 215.77kmph triumphing Ian Hutchinson’s existing 2016 record of 214.200kmph. However, it was the final lap of 216.300kmph that gave him a well-deserved victory. Hickman's lap was just three-tenths of a second shy when compared to Harrison’s outright lap record on his Kawasaki Superbike that he set last weekend.

Lightweight TT Michael Dunlop Lap time:18:26.543 Record:197.546kmph

Yet again, Michael Dunlop proved his worth by storming to a record win on the last lap on Wednesday's Bennetts Lightweight TT Race. With an astounding pace of 197.546kmph, Dunlop outpaced James Hillier's long standing record of 194.486kmph set in 2015. The other riders just didn’t seem to have an answer to Michael Dunlop’s 14 second lead to the finish line.

Michael Rutter – (For anyone who thinks Electric bikes are slow and boring) 2018 Lap time: 18:34.956 Record: 196.056kmph

Michael Karl Rutter nicknamed "The Blade", broke the TT Zero lap record on his way to the crown and became the very first rider to post speeds exceeding 193kmph on an electric bike around the Mountain course. This win took the 46-year-old’s Isle of Man TT victory tally to six. What’s also interesting is that the veteran rider crossed the line with a comfortable 23 second lead over Daley Mathison, who rides for the University of Nottingham team.

Rutter’s win didn’t come easy as he was under pressure all week and wanted to deliver for the Japanese Mugen outfit, and boy did he impress!

Ben & Tom Birchall (Sidecar TT) Lap time:19:04.353 Record:191.019kmph

Last but not the least, the Mansfield brothers claimed their seventh TT victory with a new record lap of 118.694mph / 191.019kmph. The battle between John Holden, Lee Cain and the Birchall brother saw the former taking the lead through Glen Helen on the opening lap but were overtaken by the brothers on lap two. This is where the Birchall brother produced the first sub-19 minute Sidecar lap of the TT course with a 18m 59.018s at 191.019kmph.
