The new Mercedes GLC’s entire powertrain lineup has been electrified via a 48-V mild hybrid system

The second-generation iteration of the Mercedes-Benz GLC has just landed on our shores, with prices starting from Rs 73.5 lakh and going up to Rs 74.5 lakh (all price ex-showroom). The generational makeover packs updates to its styling, cabin, features and powertrain options, so let’s take a deep dive into what the new GLC is all about, in 10 images.

If you were familiar with the first-gen GLC, you’ll notice that the changes on the outside won’t really qualify as a generational update. That said, the minor nip and tuck does make the styling look modern and relevant.

Up front, the grille has grown in size, with the tri-pointed star taking centre stage. You also get sleeker LED headlights with DRLs and a chrome finish for the lower part of the front bumper.

In profile, softer lines flow seamlessly from the front headlights to the taillights, while the  19-inch dual-tone alloys look chic, and give beefiness to its stance.

The rear too gets modest tweaks like the rest of the cars, with changes to the taillights which are now sleeker than before. The part-chrome finish for the lower rear bumper matches the treatment given to the front bumper.

With this generational makeover, the GLC has grown a bit in size with an increase of 15mm in the wheelbase, 60mm in the length, and an increase of 70 litres in the boot space, which now totals 620 litres. The SUV is available to spec in five exterior hues: Nautic Blue, Mojave Silver, Selenite Grey, Polar White, and Obsidian Black.

Jump inside the cabin and you’ll be welcomed by a radically different cabin. Inspiration from the C-Class, and hence the S-Class as well, is apparent. The driver-focused, vertically stacked 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment system makes up most of the central console, while the driver gets a 12.3-inch horizontally oriented display.

The whole cabin is very Mercedes-like, with the aircraft turbine-inspired air vents, and the neatly and thoughtfully integrated 64-colour ambient lighting. There are three themes available for the upholstery: Sienna Brown, Black, and Macchiato Beige.

Feature highlights include a dual-zone climate control, connected car tech, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charger, a 15-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system, a powered tailgate and powered front seats with memory function. The safety kit packs seven airbags, a 360-degree camera, and a host of ADAS features, including lane-keep assist, blind spot monitoring, high beam assist, and more.

The India-spec GLC continues with both 2-litre diesel and petrol engine options, but both are now assisted by a 48V mild-hybrid system, which helps churn out slightly better fuel efficiency than before.

With prices starting from Rs 73.5 lakh (ex-showroom), the new Mercedes-Benz GLC is more than Rs 11 lakh dearer than the model it replaces. That price bump is huge, but so is the hike in its opulence and technology. The new Mercedes-Benz GLC continues to rival the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Volvo XC60.
