Can the turbocharged little three-cylinder engine pull the weight of a seven-seater family SUV? Let’s find out

Nissan India has a new car in the pipeline after ages and it's a name that we are familiar with. The moniker is X-Trail, which is making a comeback in its fourth generational avatar and is set to launch in India in the coming weeks.  We’ve driven it, reviewed it, and you can read about our thoughts on the Japanese SUV in this report. But this story focuses on performance as we find out how quick the X-Trail is in a sprint from 0-100kmph.

But before we get to the exciting part, a quick spec check:

Nissan X-Trail Specifications

Instead of the strong hybrid powertrain being offered in the global model, the India-spec X-Trail gets a 12V mild hybrid unit only. It is paired with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine which produces 163 PS and 300 Nm, propelling the front wheels via a shift-by-wire CVT gearbox.

For reference, the X-trail’s rivals either get a diesel engine or a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with significantly more power. Some even offer the option of 4x4 or all-wheel drive. But the X-Trail’s engine has a trick up its sleeve: variable compression turbo. As the name suggests, it holds the ability to adjust the compression ratio of the engine as per requirement.

A lower compression ratio aids in better fuel efficiency, while a higher ratio results in increased power output. But can it be enough to give the big SUV a swift 0-100kmph time? Let’s find out:

Nissan X-Trail Performance

Not too bad for a family SUV, right? In fact, the X-Trail is quicker than a few of its diesel rivals.

It might not be the quickest thing out there, but its three-cylinder engine still got plenty of oomph for all your runabouts.

Nissan X-Trail Price and Rivals

The Nissan X-Trail will come to India as a fully imported unit, so you can expect a starting price tag of around Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom).

Bookings for the SUV are already open. Its size and pricing will put it in contention with the likes of the Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, MG Gloster, and the Toyota Fortuner.
