Kia Seltos vs Renault Duster: The Compact SUV War!

Kia will take the wraps off the second-generation Seltos on December 10, and from what we have gathered through spy shots, it isn't going to be your typical mid-cycle refresh. The second-gen SUV will get a proper grounds-up redesign, a brand new cabin, more features and probably, a hybrid powertrain as well.
Going by the camouflaged test mules that have been spotted, Kia's thrown the rulebook out the window. The new Seltos is ditching its clean European-car like design for something more radical and muscular. Think Telluride DNA shrunken down to a compact SUV, boxier proportions, a taller stance, and way more presence on the road.
Spy shots have revealed new vertical LED daytime running lights up front, tied together by a full-width light bar, with fresh alloy wheel designs, and chunkier bumpers with what looks to be a completely reworked taillight signature on the rear.

And the Seltos is probably going to grow a size larger, which should mean more legroom in the back.
Inside, it is likely to get a new dashboard design, new upholstery, and improved quality materials throughout. Kia could be sticking to the dual-screen setup that has become their signature design element. Having said that, the carmaker could also add the ‘Trinity Panoramic Display’ from the Syros, which includes two 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment system and the driver’s instrument cluster, along with a 5-inch display for climate control.
In terms of the equipment list, it is likely to have ventilated and powered front seats, dual-zone climate control, a premium sound system, panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, and a Level 2 ADAS suite.

Kia isn't messing with a formula that works. Globally, the next-gen Seltos in India will continue to offer the familiar set of engines: a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, and even a 1.5-litre diesel in select regions. These engines are paired with a variety of gearboxes, from manuals and CVTs to torque converters and DCTs.
The big story, however, is what's to come. Kia has developed a petrol-hybrid powertrain for the Seltos, which will feature a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor. It remains to be seen if this engine will make its way to India or not.

When it finally lands in India next year, pricing is likely to start around Rs 11 lakh and range up to approximately Rs 22 lakh (ex-showroom).
The competition isn't getting any easier, though. There's the Hyundai Creta, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Victoris, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Honda Elevate, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Tata Curvv, Citroen Basalt, and MG Astor that'll also be in the mix, seeking the very same buyer. The upcoming Tata Sierra will also prove to be a threat to the Seltos from what we’ve been seeing in recent teasers.
The Kia Seltos sells like hotcakes, but it's time for an update. If Kia addresses the safety ratings and keeps the design fresh without overdoing it, the second-gen model could be the one that gives the mighty Creta a proper run for its money. Not just in looks, but the whole package.
We'll find out for certain on December 10. Until then, the spy shots will have to suffice.
