Expert's Opinion on Carens Clavis
Design

SUV Meets MPV
- The Kia Carens Clavis features a brand new and more SUV-like face, getting a look similar to the global Kia EV5.
- The distinctive LED DRLs lend the car a much cleaner design than before.
- A new LED tail light bar featuring smoked-finish edges, lend a more modern look.
- While 15-inch wheels come as standard, from the mid-range HTK+ variant onwards, the Clavis comes with sporty new 17-inch alloy wheels.
- 8 different colour options! These include two shades of silver and white each, black, olive green, blue and gray.
- While 16-inch wheels are available in the lower variants, they aren’t alloy wheels like in the other grades.
- Even with the SUV styling elements, the Carens Clavis does look more like an MPV than an SUV (some may prefer the latter)
Interiors

Simplicity
- The new dashboard design in the Carens Clavis is clean but doesn’t sacrifice functionality just to look good.
- Key functions such as AC and media controls are easy to manage even while driving but have been integrated in a stylish manner.
- Depending on the variant, there are 2 interior colour patterns available. Black and beige in the entry-mid variants while the top-two get a blue and black interior.
- Fitment quality is good and the cabin feels both well-built and smartly laid out.
- Cabin quality could’ve been more premium for the price, especially in the top-end models.
Space & Practicality

Practical Power!
- The Carens Clavis offers a supremely practical cabin with great space for a family of average-sized adults!
- Users who are around 5.7-5.8-feet tall can easily fit into each seat row and have knee room to spare.
- Headroom is generous for users over 6-feet in height, even in variants with the panoramic sunroof. (1st and 2nd row)
- Adults can use the 3rd row seat and manage 2-3 hour long journeys, which is impressive for a car of the Clavis’ size
- Access to the 3rd row is made easier with tumble forward middle seats. The co-driver’s side also gets a one-touch electric tumble function for added convenience.
- Even with the 3rd row in use, there’s 216-litres of boot space available. Set the backrest to a slightly reclined angle and it’s enough for 2 small trolley bags and a backpack.
- Fold the 50:50 split 3rd row seats and you can easily fit in large suitcases or boxes.
- There are slots to store tablets and bottles in the 3rd row, while 2nd row occupants get cooled can-holders and a fold-out tray on one side.
- Front seat users get two cooled cupholders, under-armrest storage and a glovebox big enough for your car documents and cleaning cloths.
- The front and rear doors have been intelligently designed, with storage slots under the door armrest for small items, along with door pockets that can easily hold multiple 1-litre bottles.
- Those with broad shoulders will want larger seats, like you get in the Maruti Suzuki XL6.
Features

Loaded and Logical
- Besides being a spacious family car, the Carens Clavis is also very feature-loaded!
- Roof mounted rear AC vents for the 2nd and 3rd row, keyless entry, all four power windows, driver seat-height adjustment and rear sunshades come as standard.
- An 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with 6-speakers are offered from the one-above base HTE (O) variant.
- Higher variants get a 12.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a high-resolution digital instrument cluster of the same size.
- The mid-range variants offer an electric sunroof while a panoramic sunroof is offered with the top-end models.
- Fully-loaded, the Carens Clavis offers tilt-and-telescopic steering adjustment, a 4-way power adjustable driver’s seat, 64 colour ambient lighting, drive modes, ventilated front seats and an 8-speaker BOSE music system.
- There are some thoughtful features too like a lever to adjust the front passenger’s seat from the 2nd row, one-touch up/down for all power windows and a dashcam for added safety.
- Kia Connect lets you control several car functions (lights, AC, seat vents, windows) from your phone and also monitor its location and driving data.
- The larger touchscreen offered in the higher variants is crisp, responsive and offers Android Auto and Apple Carplay. However, these smartphone-linked features are not wirelessly supported.
- Kia doesn’t offer the dashcam in the ADAS-equipped top-end model.
- The top-end HTX+ is offered only with the turbo-petrol engine option. Meaning you miss out on a lot of features if you want the diesel or non-turbo petrol engine.
Safety

All In!
- 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, ISOFIX mounts are all standard in the Carens Clavis.
- Also offered as standard are hill-start assist, highline tyre pressure monitoring and all-wheel disc brakes.
- The safety package also includes front and rear parking sensors, blind view monitor and a good resolution 360-degree camera.
- The Carens Clavis is available with ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) features like forward collision warning and auto braking, lane keep assist, safe exit warning, adaptive cruise control with stop-n-go and more.
- ADAS is only available with one variant - HTX+ petrol DCT.
Performance & Mileage

Something For Everyone
- The Carens Clavis is offered with two petrol and one diesel engine option.
- All are 4-cylinder engines driving the front-wheels only.
- The (G1.5) base petrol engine delivers the smoothest and most city-traffic friendly experience of all.
- Producing 115PS of power and 144Nm of torque, this engine is a good choice for those with a relaxed driving style with enough performance for relaxed highway cruising. It is only offered with a 6-speed manual transmission.
- Opt for the turbo-petrol (G1.5 T-GDi) and you get better performance (160PS and 253Nm of torque) and more transmission options (6-speed manual/iMT and a 7-speed DCT automatic).
- This engine is a good all-rounder, giving you better performance for high-speed overtakes while also requiring less effort when driven with a full passenger load.
- We would recommend getting the 7-speed DCT automatic with this engine for its smooth and sophisticated drive experience. It also gets paddle-shifters for manual control when needed.
- The 1.5-litre diesel (CRDi VGT) produces 115PS and 250Nm of torque. It is offered with 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
- This engine is a good choice for those who have high-running and expect to do a lot of highway driving.
- While you can tell it’s a diesel, refinement levels are still decent and the quick torque delivery makes it easy to drive.
- Here too, we recommend getting the automatic, since it makes the drive experience smoother.
- Claimed fuel-efficiency figures - Diesel MT: 19.54kmpl, diesel AT: 17.50kmpl, petrol MT: 15.34kmpl, turbo-petrol MT/iMT: 15.95kmpl, turbo-petrol DCT: 16.66kmpl
- The naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine doesn’t get an automatic transmission option. This combination would be great for city users.
- The turbo-petrol engine could be more fuel-efficient. In heavy traffic, mileage can drop to 8-9kmpl.
Suspension & Ride Quality

Easy Rider
- Ride comfort is plush; absorbs potholes and bad roads with ease
- While it is a 6/7-seater car, the Clavis is easy to drive and maneuver even in cramped city lanes.
- When fully-loaded, the ride can become a little bouncy at high speeds.
Verdict

- The Kia Carens Clavis is a true all-rounder, delivering space, practicality, safety and technology in equal measure. It also does so in a size that’s not too hard to manage or live with too.
