It’ll be an all-new model likely based on a similar Heartect platform as newer Maruti hatchbacks

  • Should be powered by an 0.8-litre 47PS petrol engine

  • 1-litre engine likely on the cards

  • Standard 5-speed manual gearbox

  • AMT automatic and CNG powertrains could be offered

  • Safety features to include two airbags, ABS, and rear parking sensors

A new spy video of the Maruti Suzuki Alto has emerged that reveals a precious few details about the upcoming hatchback. Standing next to traffic, it’s easier to discern the upcoming Alto’s tallboy design, and we get a better look at the redesigned front and rear fascia as well. The compact hatchback is expected to arrive next year alongside a slew of other updated Maruti models.

The 2022 Alto is likely underpinned by the Heartect platform, similar to the recently launched Celerio. The new platform gives the Alto a seemingly larger cabin, although it’s still likely to retain its compact proportions as Maruti’s entry-level offering.

At the rear, the oversized square tail lamps, despite their camouflage, remind us of the older Maruti 800 hatchbacks. Overall, the glass area seems more than the current Alto, and it could make for a more spacious and airy cabin.

Unlike previous spy shots, this time we get a glimpse of the interior, too. Kwid-like central air vents sit at the top of the dashboard, and the steering wheel seems different as well. The rear seats seem to have fixed headrests – a cost-cutting measure we’ve seen in cars pricier than the entry-level Alto.

We expect Maruti Suzuki to offer features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, front power windows, air conditioner, and keyless entry. But possibly, the 2022 Alto could even get rear power windows and four speakers in the top-spec variant.

It should be powered by Maruti’s faithful 800cc petrol engine that makes 47PS and 69Nm in the regular Alto (41PS/60Nm on CNG). Fingers crossed, Maruti might humour petrolheads with a larger 1-litre 67PS/90Nm petrol engine in the higher-spec variants. With that engine and the small footprint, the 2022 Alto could surely be a real pocket rocket. A 5-speed gearbox will be standard, and an AMT is likely to be offered.

Safety features such as dual front airbags, ABS, and rear parking sensors are likely to be offered as standard equipment in the upcoming Alto. We could also see ISOFIX child seat mounts similar to the rest of the automaker’s lineup.

We can’t wait to get a better look at the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Alto. The existing model is India’s most affordable hatchback, but the new platform and feature updates are likely to demand a premium. We expect the ex-showroom prices to start at around Rs 3.5 lakh, and feature-loaded higher-spec variants will be pricier still. The Datsun Redi-Go and Renault Kwid are the Maruti Alto’s chief rivals.
