Kia has unveiled the Carens Clavis ahead of its launch on May 23, 2025. It will be sold alongside the existing Carens as a more premium alternative. The Clavis falls in the MPV segment, which is dominated by Maruti MPVs such as the Ertiga and XL6.
In this report, we will be comparing the Clavis with the XL6, taking you through their specifications, thereby providing an idea of which MPV would provide more value for your hard-earned money.

We still do not know the pricing of the Carens Clavis, but we know that it could start from around Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom). While the base-spec pricing of both the MPVs should be similar, top-end variants of the Clavis will definitely be more expensive than the XL6. We will find out the exact premium on May 23, but before that, let’s take a look at what all extras the Clavis offers over the XL6.

The Kia Carens Clavis is clearly the larger MPV, offering greater road presence. It is longer and wider, and also has a greater wheelbase, leading to more space inside the cabin. The third-row seats on both MPVs are better left empty for children or pets, but a good option to have for larger families.

If the features of both the MPVs are compared, the Clavis is clearly ahead with a plethora of extra features that truly make it a premium MPV. For starters, it gets a larger infotainment system, 2 more speakers, and a larger driver display. In terms of safety, too, the Clavis inches ahead with extra airbags and level-2 ADAS. Additionally the Clavis also features some extra convenience features such as tray tables for the second row and an electric double-folding feature for the second row seats, helping in easier ingress and egress into the third row.

That being said, the XL6 also comes with a decent set of amenities for the price it is offered at.
Kia will be offering the Clavis with 2 petrol engines and a diesel unit. The petrol options include a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, while the diesel engine is a 1.5-litre unit.
The NA petrol unit makes 115 PS/144 Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The turbocharged unit churns out 160 PS/253 Nm, mated to a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed clutchless manual, or a 7-speed DCT. Meanwhile, the 1.5-litre diesel generates 116 PS/250 Nm, paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

On the other hand, the XL6 comes with a sole 103 PS/137 Nm 1.5-litre petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The same engine can also be configured with a factory-fitted CNG kit, but the power output reduces to 88 PS and 121.5 Nm. The CNG option is available only with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Overall, it is the Clavis which offers the more exciting engine options. There are fuel-efficient options on both sides, with the Clavis offering a diesel and the XL6 giving the option of a CNG kit.
In conclusion, the Clavis and XL6 fulfil their common goal of transporting large families in comfort, but do it in their own style. While the XL6 does all the basics right and offers all the essentials, it misses out on the feel-good features and modern elements that Kia is offering with the Clavis. The only question that matters is - do you need the extra features, and do you need a more powerful engine? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you know your pick!

However, if the XL6 takes care of your needs, and if spending extra on features is not a priority, then the Maruti MPV will be the sensible purchase. Yes, the top-spec pricing of the Clavis is not out yet, but we do expect it to carry a significant premium over the top-spec XL6.
Stay tuned and follow ZigWheels to find out the exact pricing of the Clavis! Till then, let us know which MPV you would pick and why? The comments section below is waiting for you…
