Honda seems to be readying for a comeback in one of India’s most competitive and fast-growing segments, the sub-4-metre SUV space. After quietly exiting this segment a few years ago, the Japanese carmaker may be planning a subcompact SUV.
At the moment, Honda’s India portfolio looks lean, with just three models: the Elevate SUV, along with the City and Amaze sedans.
During the Japan Mobility Show 2025, Honda announced an ambitious roadmap for India: 10 new models by 2030, including seven SUVs. That’s right, seven. Clearly, Honda wants a bigger slice of the SUV pie, and a compact model could be the logical next step to reclaim some lost ground.
India’s compact SUV segment is practically a note-printing machine. The combination of tax benefits for sub-4-metre cars and strong demand from city buyers has turned it into a goldmine. Honda’s absence here has cost it dearly over the past few years.

Bringing back a product could not only fill that gap but also give the brand a much-needed volume booster.
Honda’s global strategy revolves around three pillars: electrification, software, and sustainability. The brand unveiled its new “Zero Series” EVs, led by the Zero Alpha concept, which will enter production by 2027. Interestingly, India is one of the few markets slated to get the Zero Alpha at launch, and it will even serve as a production hub for other regions.

Honda’s electrification roadmap includes hybrids, EVs, and even flex-fuel vehicles. The brand will continue offering hybrid options like the City e:HEV while expanding over the next few years. Expect upcoming models like the next-gen City, Amaze facelift, and the Elevate facelift to blend petrol and hybrid options before Honda goes fully electric.
Honda President and CEO Toshihiro Mibe made it clear at the Japan Mobility Show that India is a key market, and moreover, a possible manufacturing hub for Honda’s long-term plans. A dedicated team now oversees strategy and product development for India, ensuring that future models are better suited to the Indian consumer mindset, price, and driving conditions.
The upcoming product portfolio will likely include models designed specifically for India, with local production at the Tapukara facility in Rajasthan. Whether it’s compact or midsize, petrol or hybrid, expect the next wave of Hondas to be more accessible, more advanced, and definitely more India-focused than before.

So yes, the wait might soon be over for those who’ve missed a small, sharp, and practical Honda on Indian roads. And if the sub-4-metre SUV does get the green light, it could just be the comeback chapter Honda’s Indian story has been waiting for.
