Diesel isn't dead yet. While the spotlight has shifted decisively to the petrol and electric SUVs, there are still many smart diesel options under Rs 20 lakh that combine efficiency with real-world punch and everyday practicality. Here are five SUVs worth a close look today:
Tata’s 1.5-litre diesel makes 115 PS and 260 Nm, with the option of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT. The strong low-end grunt makes city driving easy, giving confidence on inclines and highway overtakes.

The Nexon cuts a bold, forward-looking dash with its split LED headlamps, signature DRLs, and a chunky rear. It wears a subcompact yet rugged silhouette that works in the city or on rural lanes. Inside, the cabin is modern with a layered dashboard, digital instrument cluster, and a large touchscreen. Space is used well, and the seats are supportive for long days on the road.

Diesel variants of Nexon are also equipped with 10.25-inch infotainment, a 360-degree camera, connected car tech, automatic climate control, and ventilated seats higher up the range. And of course, the AMT makes city driving that much easier.

Safety is a Tata strong point, and the Nexon gets six airbags, ESC, ISOFIX, hill assist, and a sturdy build. It's aided by a 5-star Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP crash rating, a major selling point.
The Venue's diesel runs on a 1.5-litre CRDi delivering 116 PS and 250 Nm with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. It is a smooth, fuel-efficient engine that gives diesel torque without having to step up to a larger SUV.

The new Venue gets a connected-car suite, which includes over 60 features such as remote lock/unlock, vehicle status, and geo-fencing. Wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay appears on select trims, along with auto headlights, cruise control, a sunroof, and a Bose-tuned 8-speaker audio system.

Standard safety includes six airbags, ESC, VSM, hill assist, TPMS, and a rear-view camera. The platform feels solid, and there's ample active and passive safety for daily use and highway cruising. Level 2 ADAS is also on offer.
The Mahindra Thar diesel comes in two flavours: a 1.5-litre diesel for rear-wheel drive and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel rated up to 132 PS and 300 Nm for 4x4 trims. Both are relaxed cruisers, but the 2.2-litre mHawk gives the Thar its unmistakable tractable punch.

The Thar's face is unmistakable: the grille, round LEDs, chunky tyres, square silhouette. It is unmistakable in this segment. The cabin too is built to last, though newer updates have seen the use of nicer materials and a more friendly design. The seats are supportive, and the visibility is great because of the tall glasshouse.
The diesel variants get a touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, cruise control, roof options soft/hard, a digital MID, and power windows. It’s not loaded with gadgets, but it covers daily needs well.

With ESC, six airbags, hill-assist, roll-over mitigation, and a solid body-on-frame feel, the Scorpio N sits planted on the road, especially with diesel torque. A few Rs 20 lakh variants offer this full safety kit.
The Sierra diesel also uses Tata's 1.5-litre Kryojet four-cylinder, which delivers 118 PS and 260 Nm with the 6-speed manual or 280 Nm with the 6-speed automatic.

Sierra's bold "Escape Mediocre" styling remains from the LED DRLs and Bi-LED headlamps to sequential indicators, flush door handles, and wrap-around glass that gives a concept-like vibe. Higher trims bring 19-inch alloys, a gesture-controlled powered tailgate, and a hidden rear wiper. Inside, Sierra feels upmarket across the range, with higher trims offering a voice-assisted panoramic sunroof, reclining rear seats, ventilated seats, and dual-zone climate control.
Flagship trims boast Horizon View with three screens, plus wireless Android Auto/CarPlay, JBL's 12-speaker Dolby Atmos system, terrain modes (AT only), paddle shifters, iRA connected-car suite, and an Arcade app suite.
Safety is a highlight: all variants get six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, and ESP with 20+ functions. All higher trims get ADAS Level 2+, adaptive cruise, AEB (car/pedestrian/cyclist), blind-spot view monitor, and lane-centring.
Kia's Seltos retains a refined 1.5-litre unit that doles out 116 PS and 250 Nm, linked to either a 6-speed manual or a slick 6-speed torque-converter automatic. It is known for being quiet, prompt in response, and strong in the mid-range, hence ideally-suited to a city-slated diesel.

The new-gen Seltos dons a sharper look with redesigned LEDs, revised DRLs, a reshaped grille, fresh alloys, and a cleaner rear. Tech and ergonomics take a front seat inside. Diesel variants retain Kia's twin 10.25-inch screens on higher trims, as well as a redesigned dashboard and improved materials in addition to better seat comfort.
Depending on the trim, diesel Seltos models could feature ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a premium BOSE sound system, wireless charging, a digital driver display, auto climate control, and Kia Connect.
Kia sis likely to equip it with six airbags as standard, along with ESC, hill-assist, TPMS, and all-disc brakes across higher variants. Top trims could bring ADAS Level 2 functions, which include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning, and autonomous braking.
Although diesel may have seen its best days, for those buyers after long-haul efficiency, strong mid-range torque, and engines that stay calm at highway speeds, these SUVs prove diesel isn't dead just yet.
From the Nexon and Venue for everyday practicality to the Thar and Scorpio N for old-school muscle, and premium picks like the Creta, Sierra, and upcoming Seltos that push diesel into a modern, tech-driven space, there's a diesel SUV for every kind of driver.
