2025 Yamaha YZF R1 & YZF R1M Has Been Internationally Unveiled

Yamaha has internationally unveiled the 2025 R1 and R1M supersport bikes, bringing a host of new updates. While the R1 is road-legal in the US, both models remain track-only in Europe. Let’s take a closer look at them: 

What’s new in the bikes? 

The new Yamaha YZF R1 gets a new design update, inspired by their MotoGP race bike. The new fairing winglets make it look quite aggressive. 

The bike also gets a bunch of updates in its underpinnings. One of the most important updates on the new bike is its redesigned front fork setup. It now features a new 43mm KYB fork and Brembo Stylema monobloc brake callipers. Additionally, it has a new Brembo master cylinder, and both combined should improve its braking performance. Yamaha has also made an effort to improve riding comfort for the rider and pillion by updating the seat’s material. 

The new R1M is quite similar to the outgoing model. It gets the same design updates as the standard R1. The R1M, being the more performance-oriented model, is equipped with a sophisticated 43mm Öhlins electronic NPX fork and a fully adjustable Öhlins monoshock that should give it better handling as compared to the standard variant. 

It additionally also features GPS data logging which is Yamaha’s data-logging and GPS allowing the rider to access the data recorded with course mapping and automatic lap timing managed by GPS. This data can be then downloaded wirelessly on the smartphone. It also enables the rider to make adjustments to the system settings and upload it back on the bike. 

What’s carried forward?

Both the 2025 Yamaha R1 and R1M continue to be powered by the same 998cc, liquid-cooled inline 4-cylinder engine that makes 200PS and 113Nm. Other carry forwards include the bike’s aluminium Deltabox frame, which is known for its robust quality and other bits.

Both the R1 and R1M are similar in terms of features. They get a 4.3-inch TFT display that provides basic information, including speed, tachometer readings, fuel level, trip data, and odometer readouts. Additionally, both models are equipped with a 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which enables advanced electronic riding aids such as traction control, 4-level cornering ABS, 4-level wheelie control, and a 3-level launch control system, among other rider assistance features.

Will the 2025 Yamaha YZF R1 make its debut in India?

The new R1 is a road-legal model in the US only. However, it’s a track-only bike in Europe.  The reason is that the US has more relaxed emission standards compared to the stringent Euro5+ emissions norms. 

Coming to India, we have shifted to stricter BS6.2 emission standards, which are even tougher than Euro5. Since the new R1 hasn’t been able to meet Euro5 norms, it won’t meet  BS6.2 standards either. However, we hope Yamaha India brings it in just as a track bike for enthusiasts who can afford it.

Launching the road-legal bike here would mean heavy investment from Yamaha to make the R1 BS6.2 compliant. However, the domestic market is quite small for such a bike and sales would be rather low.
