Bajaj recently launched the updated Pulsar NS400Z in India, and the bike now makes more power than before. It also gets better tyres and brakes, and has better equipment to offer - all for a slight premium. But how does it compare against the other bikes in its segment? Let’s have a look:

It is the KTM 390 Duke which is the most powerful bike here, followed by the Bajaj and then by the Royal Enfield. But when it comes to torque, the Royal Enfield inches ahead thanks to the bigger engine than the other two bikes. This should also theoretically make the Guerrilla easier to ride in the city as it will require fewer gear changes thanks to the torque coming in earlier than its rivals. That said, the other two bikes are no slouches either, although they do require being in the right gear at the right time to extract the most out of them.

As for the underpinnings, the KTM is the only motorcycle which gets adjustable suspension at both ends. This allows the rider to set the suspension according to his/her weight as well as the type of surface. As for braking, it is the Royal Enfield which gets the smallest front disc brake but the largest at the rear, but it also comes with wider tyres than the two, which should theoretically contribute to its relatively more laid-back handling experience. As for the safety aspect, all three motorcycles come with dual-channel ABS as standard, but it is only on the Duke and Guerrilla that you can switch off the rear ABS.

It is no surprise that the KTM 390 Duke is the lightest motorcycle of the three. This should also translate to better performance, more nimble handling and better braking out of the three. It also gets the largest fuel tank capacity, which should make it a better tourer. The Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is the heaviest and has the smallest fuel tank capacity, so it may not offer as aggressive performance as the Duke, and one will have to visit the fuel pump more often. That said, the Guerrilla has the most approachable seat height, which means that shorter riders will find it more accessible. The Pulsar sits right in between the two bikes with a manageable kerb weight and seat height, while having a slightly bigger tank than the Guerrilla.

The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z is the only motorcycle which does not get a TFT console but an LCD one. However, it supports smartphone connectivity, gets ride modes and a whole lot of other useful features. The only gripe is that the information feels a little cluttered whereas the ones on the Duke and Guerrilla are better laid-out. The Guerrilla is the only one which supports full Google Maps navigation via its round TFT console, but the caveat is that one has to keep their phone’s display switched on the whole time. Coming to the KTM, it has all the essentials covered, and the TFT console has a neat layout, which, in our opinion, is the best out of the three bikes.

Price & Verdict:

Rs 2,96,670 (ex-showroom Delhi) |
Rs 2,54,000 (ex-showroom Chennai) |
On paper, it is the KTM 390 Duke which is the fastest, has the better equipment on offer, but it is also the most expensive bike here. It makes perfect sense for someone who is looking for outright performance without having to compromise on features or electronics.
The Royal Enfield Guerrilla sits right in between the KTM and Bajaj in terms of pricing. But with decent levels of performance, tons of features and a comparatively easy riding experience, the Guerrilla is an easy bike to recommend if you want a quick bike to commute in the city and go on occasional weekend rides to your local ghats.

But it is the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z that takes the cake when it comes to being a value-for-money motorcycle. With over Rs 1 lakh more affordable than the KTM and over Rs 60,000 cheaper than the Royal Enfield, the Pulsar is the motorcycle you should go for if you are on a budget but want the highest horsepower. With the recent update, it is now a far easier bike to recommend (going by spec-sheet alone) to anyone who is looking for their first 400cc motorcycle.
