Hyundai is dedicating July 15 to its performance-focused ‘N’ brand, and what better way to do it than to unleash two speed demon concepts. Called the N22e and N Vision 74, they make their performance in unique ways that prove that the Hyundai N brand isn’t going to lose any of its hardcore nature when it eventually switches from internal combustion engines to electrics.
Technically, you’d consider it a glimpse of what we can expect if Hyundai gave the recently unveiled Ioniq 6 the hardcore N treatment as its got most of the sedan’s swoopy body. But Hyundai considers it as a standalone concept, premiering a future electric N model.
Talking performance, it's got a dual-motor setup making a combined 585PS and 740Nm, and is juiced by a 77.4kWh battery pack. Sounds familiar? Well, it matches the performance numbers of the Kia EV6 GT. While Hyundai hasn’t divulged a 0-100kmph sprint time, we know that the Kia EV6 GT does it in 3.5 seconds, so the RN22e should certainly improve upon that. That being said, the concept is claimed to top out at speeds of over 250kmph.
The real party trick isn’t under the hood, but in the work done to make the RN22e a beast around the corners. Some of it includes exploiting torque vectoring, optimal power distribution, as well as using 3D printed parts to save weight.
A performance model needs equally potent stopping power, so the RN22e comes with four-piston monobloc calipers and 400mm hybrid discs. Of course, the aerodynamics aid performance, with aggressive bumpers, a massive rear diffuser, vents all over, as well as, a racy rear wing. All in all, a fine first crack at extracting performance from the E-GMP platform.
This concept not only pays homage to the 1974 Pony concept, but gives it a motorsport twist with a widebody, massive front splitter, a plethora of cooling vents, a chunky diffuser and a large rear wing. You could also consider it a car straight out of Cyberpunk 2077.
What’s really special about this concept lies under the hood. The car combines hydrogen fuel cells and batteries, which Hyundai claims offers better cooling efficiency, as well as shorter recharge/refuelling times.
Two motors deliver in excess of 580PS and 900Nm to the rear wheels, while the top speed of the EV is claimed to be over 250kmph. Like the RN22e, it also uses torque vectoring for its cornering prowess.
Not only is it a performance demon, but also offers decent range, with a 62.4kWh battery pack and a hydrogen fuel cell tank with a capacity of 4.2kg, offering over 600km of range (claimed).
While there’s no indication from Hyundai whether either of these concepts will make it to production, it's a nice little breadcrumb from the carmaker on what its electric future could look like. That being said, the RN22e could be the closest to what we may expect from a possible Ioniq 6 N. What is confirmed to arrive is the Ioniq 5 N in 2023.
What does this mean for India? Well not much, since we are yet to have an Ioniq model here. But that’s set to change with the Ioniq 5 slated for the second half of 2022. The Ioniq 6 could take until 2023 to arrive in India as part of the carmaker’s EV roadmap to introduce up to six EVs by 2028 in the country.
