The folks at Powerdrift, our sister channel, have managed to capture an image of the upcoming Thar 5-door SUV. And the latest spy shots have some interesting revelations, as the larger off-roader will get different styling touches to differentiate itself from the smaller Mahindra Thar 3-door.

The upcoming 5-door SUV boasts redesigned 5-spoke alloy rims, with chunkier spokes with a cut on top of it, and sleeker side steps. Plus, the rear-wheel arches are squared out as compared to the circle one in the smaller SUV. Looks good, but if you’re a Jeep fanatic, you will definitely know that these design touches take inspiration from the previous-generation Wrangler. Lastly, to stand unique from the existing SUV, it could get a metal fixed hard top or a plastic hard top with removable panels. The soft top with the convertible roof could be given a miss.

For easier access into the cabin, the driver also gets a grab handle on the A-pillar unlike the three-door version. It should also get more features than the existing model like a larger touchscreen infotainment system, branded sound system, and automatic climate control. Safety should be taken care of by multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and rear parking sensors.

Underneath the hood, the Thar 5-door will utilize the smaller model’s 130PS, 2.2-litre diesel and 150PS, 2-litre turbo-petrol engines, albeit probably in a more powerful state of tune. It will be offered with 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. We were expecting the Thar 5-door to get rear disc brakes; but sadly, it still gets drums as seen on this particular test mule. And as for off-road kit, it will get a low- range transfer case, mechanical locking differential at the rear axle, and electronic locking differential on the front axle.

The Thar 5-door will command a premium over the three-door SUV, which is priced from Rs 13.59 lakh (ex-showroom). It’s expected to launch in 2023 and will rival the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door and Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door.
